The School Bus Driver Instructor is responsible for implementing the company’s established school bus training program. The role requires knowledge in driver education, safe driving practices, and a strong ability to teach in a classroom setting. The instructor will train new and existing drivers, conduct driving tests, and ensure all drivers meet the required standards for road safety.
Responsibilities- Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training sessions for new drivers.
- Teach employees the rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and vehicle operation.
- Assess employees driving abilities and provide constructive feedback.
- Prepare employees for written and practical driving exams.
- Maintain accurate records of employee progress and training activities.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal driving regulations.
- Stay updated on changes in driving laws and best practices in driver education.
- Provide additional training for drivers who need to improve their skills.
- Collaborate with other instructors and staff to improve training programs.
- Participate in monthly safety meetings.
- Participate in the administration of customer safety awareness programs and company-sponsored safety programs.
- Conduct retraining for drivers when initiated by the Customer Service Center.
- Exhibit the highest ethical best practices and personal integrity; share concerns about suspicious or inappropriate behavior with their supervisor or manager.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in teaching or transportation is a plus.
- Minimum of 2 years as a Commercial Driver License holder.
- Trainer in school bus transportation industry required.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- Certification as a driving instructor required based on state requirements.
- Strong knowledge of traffic laws and safe driving practices.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience and the ability to work with students of varying skill levels.
- Ability to maintain detailed records and manage time effectively.
- Thorough knowledge of company regulations and state and federal laws relating to transportation.
- Current DOT medical certification;
First Aid certificate if required by state; and school bus driver’s certificate for applicable state. - Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and School Bus endorsements required.
- Ability to interface and communicate with all types of individuals, well-developed written and verbal communication skills, and basic math skills.
- Knowledge of adult training techniques.
- Computer literacy, strong working knowledge of MS Office software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) and transportation-related software.
- Ability to coach and mentor employees while creating an environment that encourages and values input and feedback.
- Multi-tasking and time and priority management skills to balance conflicting demands related to internal customer care.
