TIR / AUTO / Cargo Clerk

The TIR/AUTO/Cargo Clerk plays a critical role in terminal, vessel, and cargo operations by ensuring the accurate inspection, documentation, tracking, and movement of cargo, vehicles, containers, chassis, trailers, and heavy equipment. This position is responsible for maintaining cargo integrity, supporting vessel loading operations, ensuring compliance with DOT and terminal requirements, and providing leadership and oversight to Auto Checkers.

The successful candidate will be highly detail-oriented, capable of working in a fast-paced operational environment, and able to manage multiple priorities while maintaining accuracy and safety standards. This role requires strong communication, customer service, documentation, and operational coordination skills.

In addition to cargo and vehicle processing responsibilities, the TIR/AUTO/Cargo Clerk supports vessel operations, inventory control activities, terminal housekeeping, equipment staging, and terminal labor functions as operational demands require.

Cargo Documentation & Control
  • Inspect, record, tag, and document all breakbulk cargo entering and leaving the terminal.
  • Ensure all cargo is properly documented and scheduled for the correct vessel voyage.
  • Complete stuffing sheets accurately for cargo being containerized or loaded onto flatracks.
  • Verify cargo counts during vessel operations and ensure documentation aligns with vessel load plans.
  • Prepare and maintain dock receipts and related cargo documentation.
  • Perform documentation functions associated with flatrack stuffing operations.
Auto Checker Supervision & Training
  • Supervise and provide guidance to Auto Checkers.
  • Train Auto Checkers on inspection procedures, documentation standards, and operational requirements.
  • Assign automobile-to-flatrack configurations and oversized cargo designations.
  • Ensure documentation accuracy and compliance across all checking activities.
Vehicle, Container & Chassis Inspection
  • Inspect all incoming and outgoing: trailers, chassis, containers, flatbeds, automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment.
  • Conduct chassis inspections in accordance with DOT standards (49 CFR ).
  • Inspect vehicles and equipment for: cosmetic condition, damage documentation, security concerns, customs compliance requirements.
  • Verify and record: booking numbers, container numbers, chassis numbers, trailer numbers, scale numbers, shipper information, trucker information, consignor details, cargo size specifications.
Gate & Terminal Operations
  • Serve as a TIR Clerk during peak gate operations as required.
  • Ensure accurate processing of incoming and outgoing traffic throughout the terminal.
  • Navigate and coordinate complex traffic patterns safely and efficiently.
  • Maintain operational knowledge of terminal and yard layouts.
Vessel Operations Support
  • Serve as a Vessel Checker for both: LOLO (Lift-On/Lift-Off) operations, RORO (Roll-On/Roll-Off) operations.
  • Assist with vessel staging and preparation activities.
  • Ensure all required materials and cargo are pre-staged to support efficient vessel operations.
General Labor & Terminal Support

During non-vessel operations and periods of reduced gate activity, responsibilities include:

  • Lashing and unlashing cargo.
  • Spotting containers and special-lift cargo.
  • Assisting with warehouse operations.
  • Supporting terminal operational requirements.
  • Participating in staging activities for vessel, warehouse, and terminal operations.
Inventory & Equipment Control
  • Serve as Inventory Control Clerk for all lashing gear utilized in terminal and vessel operations.
  • Maintain accurate inventory records and accountability of operational equipment.
  • Operate photographic equipment to document cargo and vehicle conditions.
Housekeeping & Safety
  • Participate in housekeeping activities throughout terminal, warehouse, and office areas.
  • Perform sweeping, trash collection, trash transport, and general cleanup duties as assigned.
  • Follow all company and terminal safety procedures and operational requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with DOT regulations and terminal safety standards.
Additional Duties
  • Perform clerical and operational assignments as directed by the Chief Clerk and other supervisors.
  • Report to various supervisors based on operational needs.
  • Complete additional duties and projects as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Technical Skills
  • Ability to accurately inspect, document, and process cargo, vehicles, and equipment.
  • Ability to decipher and work with complex alphanumeric coding systems.
  • Experience preparing and maintaining operational documentation.
  • Ability to utilize radio and telephone communication devices effectively.
  • Ability to operate photographic equipment.
