Jacksonville High School Counselor

Required Qualifications:

The individual employed for this position must hold the educational credentials, certifications, and experiences to serve as Guidance Counselor for Jacksonville School District #117 or such alternatives as the Board of Education may find appropriate or acceptable. The minimum requirements include the following:

Education & Certification Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Guidance and Counseling.
  • Appropriate certification as required by the Illinois State Board of Education.
  • Professional Educator License with appropriate endorsement.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical journals, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and individuals.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts and apply concepts to practical solutions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
  • Ability to plan and implement programs based on District and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to perform all duties with the awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Able to continuously sit and talk or hear.
  • Able to occasionally attend meetings after school hours and at other locations.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.
Duties and Essential Job Functions
  • Counsels individual students or groups of students through the development of educational and career plans.
  • Counsels individual students or groups of students with problems and refers severe problems to appropriate community resources.
  • Conducts counseling activities in the classroom in conjunction with administration and teachers.
  • Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students; arranges and conducts student/parent/teacher conferences.
  • Responds to crisis situations as appropriate.
  • Conducts registration activities in consultation with administration; makes schedule changes.
  • Coordinates activities for the U.S. Armed Services, if appropriate.
  • Attends MDC/IEP staffings as required.
  • Maintains school records; provides credit updates as appropriate.
  • Maintains cumulative GPA and class ranking as appropriate.
  • Processes progress reports and grade cards as appropriate.
  • Maintains a current counseling library and career center if appropriate.
  • Coordinates homebound instruction if needed.
  • Serves as student advocate.
  • Administers tests to students and interprets test data to students, parents, and faculty.
  • Supervises students who are being counseled or as assigned.
Other
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
