Job SummaryThis position is based in Jakarta and reports to the External Affairs Senior Manager. The Safeguard Specialist provides technical leadership for YKAN’s Oceans Program by planning, guiding, and implementing human rights, environmental, and social safeguard systems, leading the development, management, and continual updating of safeguard instruments, and serving as a liaison with sub‑national and local agencies, multilateral institutions, and private partners.
Key ResponsibilitiesThe role includes:
- Developing and updating safeguard documents such as the Risk Register, HRESM Plan, SEP, FPIC protocol, and GRM.
- Working closely with project leads to embed safeguard measures into workplans and monitor their implementation in line with partner and donor standards.
- Preparing data‑based compliance reports, managing the Oceans Program safeguard database, developing training materials, and facilitating internal and external meetings or workshops.
- Contributing to lessons learned, coordination improvements, and decision‑making processes.
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental and development/marine and fisheries/biology, with a minimum of 5 years related experience.
- Experience negotiating complex agreements.
- Experience communicating with the public and/or media both in writing and verbally.
- Familiar with Human Rights Impact Assessment Toolkit.
- Experience with Environmental and Social Safeguard instrument development and tracking, including but not limited to Feedback and Grievance Mechanism, FPIC, and ESM Plan.
- Experience presenting to and communicating with partners/government agencies, the corporate sector, and local community.
- Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English.
