The ASC Assistant Teacher at Sierra Waldorf School participates in all aspects of classroom work, including preparing classroom activities, supervising children during regular p.m. class hours, rest time, independent play, snack prep, housekeeping, hand‑work support and duties, and helping children clean and tidy the classroom. Assistant teachers also participate in regular mentoring with EC faculty and attend faculty meetings when available.

We seek dedicated Early Childhood staff who honor the wonder of early childhood, supporting classroom rhythm or guiding children during afternoon hours. Our program cultivates imagination, a strong daily rhythm, meaningful work, and abundant outdoor play within a home‑like Waldorf environment.
EssentialJob Duties
- Follow the Waldorf Curriculum as directed by the Class Teacher.
- Share in the care of the children under the Class Teacher’s direction.
- Supervise children during regular p.m. class hours and rest time.
- Supervise independent play.
- Prep snack items for the following day and maintain food lists for the Lead Assistant.
- Perform housekeeping duties.
- Provide hand‑work support and duties.
- Help children clean and tidy the classroom.
- Attend EC faculty mentoring in the last hour when applicable.
- Attend the first hour of Faculty Meetings when applicable.
- Ability to hold the rhythm of the afternoon when asked to substitute.
- Familiarity with a kitchen and ability to follow recipes.
- Organizational skills.
- Professionalism: keep adult conversations away from children and put personal phones away while working.
- Strong verbal communication skills.
- Able to follow the lead of the teacher.
- Food preparation for a large group of children.
Education and Experience
Six core units of early childhood education and at least two semester units at a college, or 12 core units of coursework in early childhood education or child development (with at least one course in each of the following:
Child, family, community, or child/family relations; Programs/Curriculum; Child/human growth and development; Experience working with children). Assistant teachers must pass FBI and Child Abuse Reference Check (CAIC) and obtain fingerprinting clearance through Live Scan.
Education and Experience
- Waldorf Early Childhood Training.
- Background in Anthroposophy.
The position requires regular standing, sitting, walking, use of hands and fingers, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting or moving items weighing up to 50 lbs. Work will take place outdoors and in a classroom, frequently noisy, and may involve exposure to bacterial contamination.
Employment DetailsDuration:
School year (end of August through mid‑June), Monday–Thursday 12:30‑5:30 and Friday 12:00‑5:30 pm.
Hours:
20–26 per week, including mentoring time.
- Base wage $17.50–$20 per hour.
- Possible 50% remission.
