Full Time/Part Time

Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. He/she will be responsible for quality instruction and for effective participation and interest in the total affairs of the college.

Under general supervision, this individual is limited to teach only clinical and dental science laboratory courses in the dental assisting curriculum. The college and the accrediting body, CODA, requires all didactic instruction to be taught by an instructor with a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Responsibilities
  • Teach clinical and dental science laboratory courses only.
  • Prepare and teach departmental courses.
  • Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field and maintaining current credentials or licensures required by the program or accreditation.
  • Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records including maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces, ensuring secure and safe working conditions, and maintaining student records (grades, attendance) in accordance with deadlines using technology-based programs such as Colleague, Web Advisor, Canvas.
  • Provide an environment conducive to student success – addressing student concerns in a timely manner, promoting retention, referring students to campus and community resources, and modeling employability skills such as adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.
Qualifications
  • Graduate of a dental assisting program or equivalent combination of education, certification, and professional experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of dental assisting, with preference given to candidates with CODA-accredited program training.
  • Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential or ability to obtain certification prior to hire date.
  • Healthcare Provider Level CPR Certification from the American Heart Association or ability to obtain certification prior to hire date.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time clinical experience as a chairside dental assistant.
  • Current unrestricted practice as a dental assistant in North Carolina or eligibility to practice dental assisting in North Carolina.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Post-secondary teaching experience.
  • Experience with Dental Materials.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.
  • Teaching and/or industry training experience.
  • Membership in the American Dental Assisting Association.

  • eLearning Level One in Canvas before the first day of the first semester teaching; eLearning Level Two in Canvas for instructors who teach online or hybrid delivery methods.
  • Emergency action plan and use of emergency equipment; required immunizations; acceptable results on background screening.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to hear and see.
  • Standing required for extended periods (up to 4 hours).
