Basic Skills Instructor – Responsibilities
The Basic Skills Instructor’s responsibilities include classroom and laboratory instruction and spending time in preparation for them; maintaining and improving competence in subjects being taught; preparing teaching materials; conferring with students on course materials; directing individual and group studies; maintaining course management system to track student progress and reviewing written examinations and papers. S/he shall also provide advisement to students regarding academic, curricular and career matters.
To ensure quality instruction in the ESOL program s/he shall work closely with Program Coordinator(s) and comply with all community college guidelines. This individual will report to the ESOL Coordinator.
- Meet with students according to the published schedule of classes.
- Develop and implement lesson plans with respect to Reading, Writing, Listening comprehension and Speaking where appropriate.
- Provide timely feedback to student on a daily basis (Monday – Friday).
- Advise students regarding goals, progress and attendance.
- Implement student retention strategies.
- Demonstrate proficiency in teaching, classroom management, advising students and responding to their needs.
- Maintain course management system to track student progress and quality hours of instruction.
- Attend appropriate staff and faculty meetings.
- Attend and participate in appropriate local, regional and state training to enhance job performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned to promote the mission and goals of the Basic Skills program and Guilford Technical Community College.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to fulfill work functions.
- Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork.

- Remain knowledgeable about education issues through reading of reports, periodicals, and other documents.
- Maintain a positive attitude appropriate with dealing with public, staff, and students.
- Dress in a manner that is professional and appropriate.
- Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
Bachelor’s degree required from a regionally accredited post-secondary institution.
Education PreferredNone.
Experience Preferred2 years of teaching experience preferred.
KSA Required- Must be proficient in computer applications and software systems.
- Must have strong customer relation skills.
- Must be able to adjust to diverse student populations and flexible work conditions/situations.
- Must possess fluent reading; verbal and written English communication skills.
- Must have ability to develop lesson plans and curriculum.
- Must have ability to teach to a variety of learning styles.
- Must be able to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Be knowledgeable of adult learners.
- Possess ability to interact with individuals of diverse cultures.
- Ensure all records, accountability documents, attendance rosters and any supporting documents are completed in a timely manner and in compliance with the Basic Skills Department / Community College guidelines.
Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office work environment. No or very limited exposure to physical risk. Be able to perform duties, which require standing, bending, stooping, lifting/carrying 20 pounds.
