Full Time/Part Time
Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, supporting college administrative requirements, and maintaining competency in their instructional field. They will provide quality instruction and contribute to the college's overall mission.
Summaryof Duties
Teaching
- Prepare and teach departmental courses in turfgrass management, landscape, and/or horticulture.
- Develop learner‑centered lesson plans and employ teaching strategies that accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Incorporate current technology into classroom, distance‑learning, and laboratory environments.
- Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
- Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials, including syllabi, supplementary materials, and instructional media.
- Conduct appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs.
Professional Development
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field and, as required, maintain current credentials or licenses.
- Engage in opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.
Administration
- Maintain classroom and laboratory spaces, including upkeep of assigned equipment.
- Ensure security of facilities, equipment, and instructional materials and maintain safe working conditions.
- Maintain student records (grades and attendance) using technology‑based programs (e.g., Colleague, Web Advisor, Moodle) in accordance with deadlines.
- Comply with all applicable college, state, and federal rules and regulations.
Student Support
- Address student concerns in a timely manner.
- Promote retention and persistence by helping students develop strategies for success.
- Refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.
- Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.
Additional Duties
- Perform all duties assigned by the supervisor.
- Education Required: Associate’s degree in Turfgrass Management Technology or a related field from a regionally accredited institution.
- Education Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management Technology or a related field; industry‑recognized license (e.g., pesticide or herbicide license).
- Experience
Required:
3 years of relevant industry experience in turfgrass management or related field; proficiency with current turfgrass management practices; valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record. - Experience Preferred: More than 3 years of relevant industry experience; post‑secondary teaching or industry training experience; experience with assessment of student learning outcomes; experience with distance learning or alternate instructional delivery systems.
- The instructor must possess understanding of the community college’s “open door” policy and demonstrate professional competence.
- Multi‑task, respect diversity, adapt to changing procedures, create and maintain a learner‑centered environment, communicate effectively, and implement technology solutions.
- Mandatory trainings: reporting requirements; discrimination and anti‑harassment; shooter on campus; personal information protection; ethics and social responsibility; eLearning Level One; eLearning Levels Two and Three for online or hybrid teaching.
- May include teaching day, evening, and/or weekend hours.
- Follow general industry safety standards while performing instructional duties.
- Work in classroom, laboratory, shop, and outdoor environments; may need to remain in a stationary position for extended periods; may operate required heavy equipment.
- Acceptable criminal history check results are required.
