Job Description:
Teaching faculty at Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) are responsible for supporting student success by creating an optimum learning environment, responding to student needs, managing effective instructional activities, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, developing cooperative work relationships with other faculty and staff, and supporting college administrative requirements. The instructor will be responsible for quality instruction and effective participation in college affairs.
Under general supervision, this part‑time faculty member will provide instructional training in small engine repair in the Personal and Professional Enrichment Department under the Workforce and Continuing Education Division. The course is designed to help students understand basic to intermediate fundamentals of small engine repair in a way that is engaging, interesting, and relevant. Students will learn how to service small engines found in lawn and garden equipment, snow blowers, or small appliances.
Hands‑on activities and instruction will introduce students to the basic principles of two‑cycle and four‑cycle engine operation, fuel and exhaust systems, ignition components, lubrication systems, and cooling systems. The faculty member may be assigned to teach at any of the GTCC campuses.
Prepare & teach departmental courses to include:
- Develop learner‑centered lesson plans
- Employ teaching strategies & instructional materials for different learning styles
- Incorporate current technology in classroom, distance learning, and laboratory environments as pedagogically appropriate
- Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population
- Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate
- Conduct assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs as appropriate
Maintain a professional status that supports the instructional mission by:
- Participating in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field; maintaining current credentials or licensures as required by program or accreditation
- Participating in professional development opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies
Provide daily & ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment and student records to include:
- Maintaining classroom and laboratory spaces, including upkeep of assigned equipment
- Providing security of facilities, equipment and instructional materials and maintaining safe working conditions
- Complying with all applicable college, state and federal rules and regulations
Provide an environment conducive to student success to include:
- Addressing student concerns in a timely manner
- Promoting retention/persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success
- Referring students to campus and community resources when appropriate
- Demonstrating and modeling the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility and teamwork
- Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor
- High School Diploma or GED graduate
- Associate’s Degree from a regionally accredited post‑secondary institution
- Small Engine Repair Certification
- Teaching and/or industry training in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars
- Two‑year professional work experience, teaching, or on‑the‑job training
- Two years teaching experience or on‑the‑job training
- Two years of experience in performing service repairs on small equipment and appliances such as mowing equipment and handheld power tools
The instructor shall possess an understanding of and commitment to the nature and role of the Community College, particularly its open door policy. He/she shall have demonstrated personal and professional competence for the responsibilities assigned. The instructor must be able to:

- Operate tools and equipment for small engines
- Flexibility in teaching work hours, day, evening and/or weekend hours
