OverviewAs the Financial Crime Manager [internally referred to as Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) Team Lead], you will report to the Deputy Head of Financial Crime Operations, within the Global Financial Crime Operations Team. In this role, you will lead a team responsible for conducting Counter party Due Diligence (CDD) activities across both new High‑Risk counter party onboarding and High‑Risk periodic reviews, ensuring compliance with Shell’s financial crime risk management framework.
You will oversee the assessment of financial crime risks associated with counter parties and drive the delivery of high‑quality due diligence outcomes. In addition, you and your team will serve as Financial Crime Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), providing expert guidance and risk‑based advice to Commercial Operations, the Trading & Supply (T&S) business, and other stakeholders. You will support the resolution of complex financial crime queries and escalations, working closely with Compliance Advisory teams to ensure informed decision‑making and adherence to regulatory and internal policy requirements.
This is a leadership role that combines people management, operational excellence, stakeholder engagement, and deep financial crime expertise to safeguard the business while enabling commercial activities.
- Support the Deputy Head of Financial Crime Operations in driving the performance of the EDD team, ensuring delivery against agreed productivity, quality, and service‑level targets.
- Lead the management and resolution of urgent and complex escalations arising from established financial crime and due diligence processes.
- Provide Subject Matter Expert (SME) guidance on financial crime compliance matters, supporting robust and risk‑based decision‑making across the organization.
- Ensure Enhanced Due Diligence (EDD) reviews are completed in accordance with the T&S Financial Crime Policy, associated standards, and agreed turnaround times.
- Act as a trusted advisor to first‑line business stakeholders, offering expert support on complex due diligence and financial crime‑related matters.
- Review and challenge counter party risk assessments, ensuring risks are appropriately identified, documented, and mitigated, and that EDD cases are of a high standard prior to approval.
- Support EDD Analysts in preparing submissions for the High‑Risk Counter party Committee (HRCC) and High‑Risk Approval Forum (HRAF), facilitating effective review and decision‑making by senior management.
- Provide guidance on exceptions to financial crime policies, standards, and procedures, ensuring risks are clearly articulated and appropriately managed.
- Partner with the T&S Compliance Training Team to design, develop, and deliver financial crime training and awareness initiatives for the global T&S Compliance function and wider business.
- Drive capability building across the Global EDD team through coaching, mentoring, knowledge sharing, and the development of technical and professional competencies.
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance due diligence processes, controls, and operational effectiveness.
- Extensive experience managing KYC, CDD, and/or EDD teams within a financial crime compliance environment.
- Degree‑qualified, with AML, Financial Crime, or Compliance certifications considered an advantage.
- Strong knowledge of global financial crime regulations and compliance requirements.
- Demonstrated ability to apply a risk‑based approach to EDD reviews, including cases involving PEPs, high‑risk jurisdictions, sanctions exposure, and other elevated‑risk counter parties.
- Knowledge of global energy markets (Oil, Gas, Power, and Carbon) and financial markets is desirable.
- Strong people leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, and develop high‑performing teams.
