Offer Description

Student scholarship position available in the Institute of Physical Chemistry PAS within National Science Center (NSC) Sonata 17 Project no. 2021/43/D/ST5/01929, entitled “Structurally tuned and nanostructured polymers conducting in both the positive and negative potential range as electrode materials for supercapacitors and molecular interconnections”

The research goal of our Project is to devise and fabricate alternated donor-acceptor-donor-type ambipolar polymer-semiconductor-based electrodes with different nanostructures, suitable for use as electroactive materials in electrochemical capacitors (supercapacitors). Ambipolarity means electroactivity at both negative and positive potentials. In the preparation of structurally tuned ambipolar polymers, naphthalene bisimide (NBI) units (electroactive at negative potentials) will be symmetrically core-functionalized with two different electron-donor units (electroactive at positive potentials).

It is expected that the rational design and tuning of the structure and nanostructure of ambipolar semiconductor polymers will affect the long‑term performance of these functional materials and introduce the desired high operating voltage into the supercapacitor device. We hope that these materials will be promising for ensuring high performance of supercapacitor devices in terms of energy density and power density, as well as for energy transport to the desired location with minimal loss.

Hence, studies conducted under applied voltage will be essential for understanding and improving their energy transport and stability.

By fabricating and analyzing ambipolar polymer-based electrodes with different molecular structures, we will select electrodes with the highest stability and electroactivity. The proposed research objective is to gain control over the distinct molecular structures of ambipolar polymer semiconductors by studying their properties using electrochemistry and microscopy.
