Affirm is reinventing credit to make it more honest and friendly, giving consumers the flexibility to buy now and pay later without any hidden fees or compounding interest.
The Repayment Scheduling engineering team is growing rapidly, and we’re looking for a Senior Software Engineer specializing in Backend development. Our Backend team is located entirely in Europe within the same time zone, but culturally rooted in Silicon Valley.
We build and own the system that enables our users to automate their payments, at a scale of up to $40B each year. We directly own the configuration and orchestration of those payments, and we improve the financial lives of over 20 million people, giving them peace of mind that their payments will be made on time.
Our work is agile and fast‑paced, shipping new code to production every two‑week sprint, and rigorously measuring the impact it has on our users’ lives and company financials.
What You’ll Do- Own and deliver quarterly goals for your team, leading engineers through ambiguity to solve open‑ended problems and ensuring everyone is supported throughout delivery.
- Support peers and stakeholders in the product development lifecycle by collaborating with product management, design and analytics, participating in ideation, articulating technical constraints, and partnering on decisions that properly consider risks and trade‑offs.
- Proactively identify project, process, technology or business issues, advocate for them, and lead in solving them.
- Support the operations and availability of your team’s artifacts by creating and monitoring metrics, escalating when needed, and supporting keep‑the‑lights‑on and on‑call efforts.
- Foster a culture of quality and ownership on your team by setting or improving code review and design standards, and advocating for them beyond your team through writing and tech talks.
- Help develop talent on your team by providing feedback and guidance, and leading by example.
- 4+ years of experience designing, developing and launching backend systems at scale using languages like Python or Kotlin.
- Track record of developing highly available distributed systems using technologies like AWS, MySQL and Kubernetes.
- Experience defining a technical plan for the delivery of a significant feature or system component with an elegant, simple and extensible design, and writing high‑quality code that is easily understood and used by others.
- Proficiency at making significant changes in a large code base, and having developed a suite of tools and practices that enable your team to do so safely.
- Demonstrated ownership of personal growth, proactively seeking feedback from your team, manager and stakeholders.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills that support effective collaboration with a global engineering team.
