The Instructor, Astronomy will be responsible for supporting student success by creating optimal learning environments, managing instructional activities, developing curriculum, modeling employability skills, demonstrating professionalism, fostering relationships with colleagues, and supporting college administrative requirements.

Duties

& Functions Teaching
  • Prepare and teach departmental courses, including physics and astronomy courses.
  • Develop learner‑centered lesson plans and employ strategies appropriate for diverse learning styles.
  • Incorporate technology in classroom, distance learning, and laboratory environments.
  • Model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
  • Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials such as syllabi, supplemental materials, and instructional media.
  • Update and revise curriculum to maintain currency.
  • Develop new courses as needed to support the instructional mission.
  • Participate in course and program development and review as appropriate.
  • Conduct assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs.
Professional Development
  • Engage in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field and keep current credentials or licenses.
  • Seek opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.
Administration
  • Oversee facilities, equipment, and student records, including classroom and laboratory spaces.
  • Ensure security of facilities and instructional materials and maintain safe working conditions.
  • Maintain student records (grades, attendance) using technology‑based programs such as Colleague, Web Advisor, and Moodle.
  • Comply with all applicable college, state, and federal regulations.
Student Support
  • Conduct recruiting activities and provide academic advising.
  • Promote retention and persistence by helping students develop success strategies.
  • Assist students with registration and graduation processes.
  • Refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.
  • Maintain student records.
College Service
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff from other divisions to promote communication, coordinate schedules, and support student success.
  • Serve on department, division, and college committees.
  • Participate in institutional initiatives and collaborate with educational partners, businesses, industry, and external agencies.
  • Support collegiality and teaching excellence through mentoring and peer observation.
  • Participate in extracurricular student activities and clubs.
  • Attend professional development sessions, meetings, graduation, and convocation as required.
  • Demonstrate and model the college’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem‑solving, responsibility, and teamwork.
  • Perform all duties assigned by the supervisor.
Education Required
  • Master’s degree in Astronomy or a related field (e.g., Planetary Science, Astrophysics) with a minimum of 18 graduate semester‑hour credits in Astronomy from an institutionally accredited college or university.
Education Preferred
  • Doctoral degree in Astronomy or related field from an institutionally accredited college or university.
Experience Required
  • Three years of post‑secondary teaching experience in undergraduate (100 or 200 level) Astronomy courses.
Experience Preferred
  • Greater than three years of post‑secondary teaching experience in undergraduate Astronomy courses.
  • Community college teaching experience.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.
