Dutiesand Functions
Under general supervision this individual will serve as the primary instructor for the state‑approved Activity Director – Basic Course. The course equips students with occupation‑specific and employability skills needed to work in assisted living or skilled nursing facilities. The faculty member must be able to instruct a wide variety of topics within the curriculum and may be required to teach day, evening, and/or weekend hours.
Flexibility to teach on any of GTCC’s multiple campuses is required.
- Develop learner‑centered lesson plans.
- Employ teaching strategies and instructional materials for different learning styles.
- Incorporate current technology in classroom, distance learning, and laboratory environments.
- Create and model a quality learning environment that supports a diverse student population.
- Prepare, distribute, and utilize instructional support materials, including course syllabi, supplementary materials, instructional media, and other devices as appropriate.
- Conduct appropriate assessment of student learning outcomes in courses and programs/general education.
- Participate in professional development activities to maintain currency in the field; maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program or accreditation.
- Participate in opportunities to advance teaching skills and strategies.
- Provide daily and ongoing oversight of facilities, equipment, and student records.
- Maintain classroom and laboratory spaces including upkeep of assigned equipment.
- Provide for the security of facilities, equipment, and instructional materials, and maintain safe working conditions.
- Maintain student records (e.g., grades and attendance) in accordance with established deadlines using technology‑based programs such as Colleague, Web Advisor, and Moodle.
- Comply with all applicable college, state, and federal rules and regulations.
- Address student concerns in a timely manner.
- Promote retention and persistence by assisting students to develop strategies for success.
- Refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.
- Demonstrate and model the College’s employability skills: adaptability, communication, information processing, problem solving, responsibility, and teamwork.
- Perform all duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Associate’s degree in Human Services or a related field from an institutionally accredited college or university.
- National Certification Council for Activity Professionals (NCCAP) certification.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in Human Services, Recreational Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or a related field from an institutionally accredited college or university.
- Three years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting.
- Teaching and/or industry training experience in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing‑education seminars.
- Greater than three years of relevant experience in a healthcare setting.
- Post‑secondary teaching experience.
- Experience with distance learning and/or alternate instructional delivery systems.
- Mandatory GTCC trainings upon initial hire and annual updates as required (Reporting Requirements, Discrimination & Anti‑Harassment, Shooter on Campus, Personal Information Protection, Ethics and Social Responsibility, Linking Student Learning Outcomes, Canvas Certification if teaching online or hybrid).
May include teaching day, evening, and/or weekend hours. Typical settings: classroom, computer lab, or shop space. May include teaching on Greensboro, Jamestown, High Point, or Cameron campuses as assigned.
Physical requirements:
stand for extended periods of time; lift at least 25 pounds.
Criminal history checks with acceptable results are required.
