OverviewThe U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is offering a research internship in wetland biogeochemistry located in Jamestown, North Dakota. The internship will provide hands‑on experience in field ecology, environmental monitoring, laboratory techniques, data management, and federal research careers.
Research ProjectThe Web4M project (Wetland Biogeochemistry: Mechanisms, Models, Management, Methods) focuses on understanding wetland biogeochemistry, greenhouse gas fluxes, hydrology, soil processes, and ecological change in Prairie Pothole Region wetlands. The internship will involve field sampling, laboratory processing, and data analysis.
Responsibilities- Participate in field sampling and laboratory processing associated with wetland biogeochemistry research.
- Collect soil cores, water samples, vegetation measurements, greenhouse gas flux measurements, and deploy or maintain field equipment.
- Prepare samples in the lab, dry and weigh soils, organize samples, prepare water chemistry, and enter data.
- Perform computer‑based tasks such as organizing datasets, spreadsheet management, basic GIS or mapping support, figure preparation, and quality control of environmental datasets.
- Participate in research discussions, team meetings, and scientific planning activities.
- Gain hands‑on experience in wetland ecology, biogeochemistry, and field research methods.
- Develop technical and communication skills relevant to federal science careers.
- Understand interdisciplinary environmental research workflow.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, earth science, geology, biology, or related field.
- Degree received within the past four years or anticipated to be received by 6/1/2029.
- Strong academic record and interest in wetland ecosystem research.
- Proficiency in field sampling techniques, laboratory work, and data management.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or qualified foreign national under U.S. immigration regulations.
- Start date:
June 15, 2026 (flexible). - Length:
Initially 10 weeks, renewable upon recommendation. - Participation: full time.
