Job Description

Purpose: Consistent with the Jamestown School Department’s vision and mission, the Special Education Teacher works in partnership with parents, students, educators, administrators, and external agencies to promote student achievement and develop students’ interest, abilities, talents, and skills for education by implementing the student’s IEP and district‑approved curriculum. The Special Education Teacher is responsible for documenting teaching and student progress, activities, and outcomes;

developing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to perform assigned tasks; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress toward IEP goals.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (Master's preferred)
  • Certificate required by the Rhode Island State Department of Education; current RI certification in mild/moderate special education and elementary education (preferred)
  • Previous experience 3‑5 years preferred
  • Hold valid RI Special Education Mild/Moderate certification
  • Successful experience in teaching special education students
  • Thorough knowledge of all federal and state special education laws and regulations
  • Certified or willing to be certified in CPI – Non‑Violent Physical Crisis Intervention
  • Previous experience teaching in K‑8; 3 years of experience preferred
  • Citizenship, residency, or work visa required.

    Responsibilities
    • Adheres to the policies of the Jamestown School Department.
    • Adheres to all District, Federal and State policies, procedures and regulations for IDEA and ADA.
    • Promotes the attainment of the District’s mission, vision, and strategic plan.
    • Displays strong and deep knowledge of subject matter content and standards.
    • Provides an instructional program to meet the needs of all students, employing a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media for specially designed instruction.
    • Plans engaging lessons (taught curriculum) aligned with written and tested curriculum.
    • Implements interventions for students who struggle with the taught and tested curriculum.
    • Meets and instructs assigned classes on a regular, consistent basis at specified locations and times.
    • Utilizes instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques to motivate and enable each student to achieve objectives.
    • Takes safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
    • Creates a classroom environment that promotes student involvement in the learning process and enables each student to achieve objectives.
    • Communicates high and clear expectations to all students and families.
    • Communicates regularly with students and parents about academic, behavioral, social, and emotional status; and reports immediately when concerns arise.
    • Collaborates respectfully and truthfully with students, parents, and colleagues.
    • Contributes to collaborative planning activities with colleagues.
    • Serves as a resource person supporting students’ IEP or 504 plans, providing recommendations to general education staff on appropriate accommodations, modifications, and interventions.
    • Designs and implements student IEPs, prepares necessary paperwork, and convenes IEP and evaluation team meetings.
    • Uses student data in treatment/intervention design and adjusts services based on ongoing progress monitoring.
    • Administers and reports on required evaluations for the special education process.
    • Supports and assists MTSS teams in adopting a problem‑solving model during meetings, aids in selecting, designing, and implementing evidence‑based interventions, and helps teams plan to monitor tiered intervention progress.
    • Takes responsibility for personal professional growth.
    • Participates in school events and improvement efforts.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
