Overview
A well-established advanced manufacturing organisation is hiring a GTAW Welding Process Applications Engineer to lead TIG and orbital welding technologies within a high-mix, precision manufacturing environment.
This role acts as the technical authority for GTAW and orbital welding
, owning process development, qualification, and scale-up of stainless-steel welding solutions for tubing assemblies and precision components. You’ll work closely with Engineering, Quality, Production, and customers to deliver robust, repeatable, code-compliant welding systems.
- Lead the introduction and deployment of GTAW and orbital welding systems, including power supplies, weld heads, fixtures, and controls
- Develop, document, and qualify welding procedures (WPS/PQR) to AWS and ASME standards
- Provide technical leadership on weld joint design, fixturing, and tooling development
- Establish weld process monitoring, data logging, and traceability systems
- Drive root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide hands-on technical support and training to operators, engineers, and technicians
- Support capital equipment justification, budgeting, and project scheduling
- Collaborate with customers on manufacturability feedback and weld design recommendations
- Participate in audits and qualification activities for welded products and processes
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred (Associate degree with extensive welding experience considered)
- 5+ years hands-on GTAW (TIG) welding experience
- Orbital welding experience strongly preferred
- Proven experience developing and scaling welding processes for production
- Strong understanding of AWS D17.1, AWS D18.2, or ASME Section IX
- Experience leading cross-functional or matrixed engineering teams
- Working knowledge of metallurgy, thermal distortion control, and fixture design
- Experience with automated orbital welding systems (AMI, Liburdi, Polysoude, or similar)
- Proficiency in Solid Works and Microsoft Office
- Familiarity with PLC / HMI systems is a plus
- Understanding of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma principles
