A leading food processing company is seeking a Senior Thermal Processing Manager to lead thermal process development, validation, documentation, and technical support for shelf-stable food manufacturing operations.
This role will support thermal processing programs across manufacturing facilities, with responsibility for developing and validating scheduled processes, supporting regulatory compliance, evaluating process deviations, and serving as a technical resource for commercial sterilization and canned food processing.
Responsibilities- Develop, validate, document, and support filing of thermal processes for canned food products.
- Design and conduct heat penetration and temperature distribution studies.
- Establish thermal processes using calculation software such as CALSoft, NumeriCAL, or similar tools.
- Evaluate process deviations and recommend appropriate product disposition.
- Lead laboratory-based thermal processing research and product/process development initiatives.
- Serve as a subject matter expert for thermal processing, commercial sterilization, in-container sterilization, and aseptic processing.
- Support manufacturing facilities with process reliability, food safety, product quality, and regulatory compliance.
- Train and mentor technical, quality, and operations personnel on thermal processing principles.
- Maintain working knowledge of FDA regulations governing low-acid and acidified canned foods, including 21 CFR 11, 108, 113, 114, and 117.
- Maintain required process documentation and support records.
- Bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD in Food Engineering, Food Science, Food Microbiology, Biosystems Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of hands-on thermal processing experience, or 10+ years of experience with multiple processing technologies related to in-container sterilization and aseptic processing and packaging systems.
- Experience with heat penetration studies, temperature distribution studies, scheduled processes, and thermal process validation.
- Working knowledge of low-acid and acidified canned food regulations.
- Experience with CALSoft, NumeriCAL, or similar thermal process calculation software preferred.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with R&D, quality, regulatory, engineering, and plant operations teams.
- Willingness to work onsite in Janesville, WI and travel approximately 20%.
