Engineering Technician I

Under general direction of the Assistant City Engineer, the Engineering Technician I is responsible for providing skilled technical support in the performance of civil engineer technician work related to City public works and private development projects. Position requires skilled technical work in relation to construction layout, inspection and preparation of plans, quantities and maps using AutoCAD Civil 3D or ESRI GIS to support municipal engineering projects or studies.

  • Performs drafting and design work on AutoCAD Civil 3D software, ESRI GIS, and other related computer design equipment.
  • Prepares and updates plans, diagrams, maps, and as-built drawings for street, water, and sewer improvements using AutoCAD software and ESRI GIS.
  • Inspects construction work for compliance with specifications and applicable regulatory requirements; provides layout for complicated public works construction projects.
  • Operates manual and electronic specialized survey equipment in a variety of field survey work, such as completing topographic surveys, establishing alignments, and setting points for construction staking of streets, roadways, curb & gutters, sewer and water mains, and culverts.
  • Performs high-level mathematical calculations involving slopes and trigonometry.
  • Obtains field traffic data, including setting out field data collection equipment and performing traffic counts.
  • Records and maintains field books and project documentation, which may include field notes, standard level, cross-section, sketches or drawings, and computations.
  • Files and retrieves engineering plans, maps, exhibits, and various documents.
  • Assists in the preparation of reports, specifications, cost estimates, bid summaries, payments, work orders, and project-related exhibits.
  • Research records for information related to parcels and property owners.
  • Inputs as-built record information, including locations and various attributes of completed construction projects in ESRI GIS, and prepares and files as-built record drawings using Civil 3D.
  • Completes condition assessments of existing City infrastructure and analyzes the collected data to determine appropriate maintenance or rehabilitation methods.
  • Provides information to other departments and the public; investigates complaints of construction defects and takes appropriate follow-up actions.
  • Measures and computes quantities of work completed and prepares pay estimates.
  • Accurately communicates City policies, programs, and procedures with clarity and empathy to a diverse public.
  • Follows all safety regulations, policies, and procedures; reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor; reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible; follows recognized safe work practices.
  • Performs other special projects and other job duties as assigned or required during regular and non-business hours.
  • All employees may be assigned by the City Manager or their designee to perform duties and assume responsibilities that are outside the scope of their work duties when the City Manager has declared a City disaster or the City Emergency Operations Center has been initiated.

The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in civil engineering technology, land surveying, construction technology, construction management, geography/GIS, or related field from an accredited college or university is required.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in field work and practical office, or two years as an engineering intern with field experience, is required.
  • A valid, state-issued driver's license at time of hire is required.
  • A combination of equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the Human Resources Office may be considered in lieu of minimum requirements.

    Knowledge:

    • Working knowledge of AutoCAD Civil3D and ESRI GIS software.
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (i.e. Word, Excel, and Outlook).
    • Working knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, and methods of engineering technology, civil engineering projects, concepts, and terminology.
    • Working knowledge of construction materials and methods involved in the construction and/or maintenance of municipal street and utility infrastructure.
    • Working knowledge of drafting and mapping principles, methods, and techniques.
