Junior Tooling Designer

The role of this position is to apply advanced techniques and analysis to the design and application of press tooling, fixtures, gages, assemblies, and related items used in the production of P/M components.

  • Tooling Designer:
    Effectively applies existing P/M processing parameters to the definition of powder blends, dimensional change, and tooling concepts for production of components from customer drawings and related inputs from the quote process. Designs tooling, gages, fixtures, and other items specified during the APQP process. Design outputs include math models, detail drawings, engineering data, wear allowances, assemblies, bill of materials, setup sheets and other information needed by toolmakers, engineers, and production teams.

    Works closely with DSB Tool Room and Tool Control functions to procure necessary items within the established APQP timeline and project budget. Communicates status to APQP team at all stages of design cycle. Verifies receipt of all purchased tooling components and validates form, fit, and function with existing press adapters and hardware to ensure production readiness. Collaborates with setup teams, engineers, and production personnel to develop processes, resolve quality and productivity issues, and drive continuous improvement.

    Reviews tooling failure data to implement design-driven improvements while communicating project timelines and status to DSB management.

    Advanced:
    Develops and applies advanced powder metallurgy (P/M) processing techniques to optimize legacy production and launch new products. Applies Lean methodologies to compress design cycles, improve accuracy, and establish engineering best practices within the group. Conducts design reviews and provides targeted feedback based on manufacturing process plans and development risks. Partners cross-functionally with the Tool Room, Setup, and Maintenance teams to assess equipment capability, build improvement plans, and engineer technical solutions.

    Utilizes advanced deflection, stress, and surface-wear analysis to design high-performance tooling. Analyzes setup and pressing workflows to engineer solutions for better quality, productivity, and changeover times. Manages tooling backup plans, repair budgets, and continuous improvements while providing regular status and timeline updates to DSB management.

    General:
    Individuals directed by management to operate a vehicle for work purposes will observe the requirements of the Fleet Safety Program. Support, promote, and perform in a manner consistent with continuous improvement goals and the values of DSB Technologies which includes following the policies, procedures, and requirements of our Quality Management and IS0 14001 Environmental Management Systems. All other duties as assigned by your supervisor

  • Qualifications and

    Experience:

    • Associates Degree in Mechanical Design or equivalent.
    • Working knowledge of mechanical elements such as structural steel, tool steel, heat treating, fasteners, bearings, mechanisms, springs, pneumatics
    • Solid understanding of structural and mechanical components such as gears, sprockets, cams, and bearings and related manufacturing and measurement techniques in common use.
    • Basic working knowledge of machine controls and related theory.
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
    • Proficiency in solid modeling (Solid Works preferred), mechanical design, basic mechanics, stress analysis, and excellent math skills.
    • Ability to apply and interpret GD&T and other numerical methods using available software.
    • Familiar with basic engineering practices, design control and related quality documentation processes.
    • Ability to apply statistical methods to performance analysis and problem solving.
