ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilize the Information System to receive samples, order tests, answer questions from nurses and physicians.
  • Documents quality control activities and produces reports required to perform job tasks.
  • Confirms accuracy of patient sample identification prior to performing processes; evaluates specimen quality and identifies when unacceptable. Documents information concerning quality of specimen.
  • Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimens received from surgery.
  • Operates tissue processing equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
  • Performs tissue sectioning using microtome, prepares slides, stains and cover slips.
  • Performs special and immunohistochemical stains and procedures as necessary.
  • Performs gross examination on designated specimens using canned comments under the direction of a Pathologist.
  • Maintains filing system and records for slides, blocks and tissues.
  • Performs daily preventative maintenance of equipment.
  • Works in conjunction with Oncologists and Radiologists to obtain both bone marrow cores and bone marrow aspirates for hematological and pathological examination.
  • Orders, processes, follows and results all pathology reference lab testing.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Graduate of an approved histotechnology program preferred. Must have at least three years of experience as a histotechnologist. Must be qualified to perform high complexity testing according to CLIA 493.1489 Standard;
Testing personnel qualifications.

CERTIFICATE AND LICENSURE

HT ASCP certification required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Passing the Driver's License Check and/or Credit Check (for those positions requiring).
  • Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.
  • Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
