Reputable law firm is growing their team and looking to add a criminal defense attorney based in Madison, Wisconsin, will represent individuals or entities accused of criminal activities. Their primary responsibility is to ensure that the legal rights of the accused are upheld throughout the legal process, from arrest to trial, and, if necessary, through appeals.
Key Responsibilities:- Analyze the charges and evidence brought against the client.
- Provide legal advice on possible defense strategies and outcomes.
- Represent clients in court hearings, arraignments, trials, and sentencing.
- Conduct thorough research on case law, precedents, and statutes relevant to the case.
- Prepare legal documents such as motions, briefs, and appeals.
- Negotiate with prosecutors to reach favorable plea deals or dismissals.
- Present and argue motions in court to suppress evidence or dismiss charges.
- Defend clients in front of a judge or jury by presenting evidence, cross-examining witnesses, and arguing legal theories.
- Ensure procedural fairness and challenge any violations of the client’s rights.
- Assist with filing appeals or post-conviction relief if the client is convicted.
- Negotiate sentencing or probation terms.
- Education:
Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and passing the Wisconsin Bar Exam. - Experience:
Experience in criminal law, including internships or clerkships with criminal courts or law firms, is highly desirable. - Skills:
Strong oral and written communication skills, analytical thinking, negotiation abilities, and knowledge of Wisconsin criminal statutes and case law.
Criminal defense attorney should expect to work in a hybrid environment between in-office and in-court. They spend significant time in courtrooms, meeting with clients, and preparing cases.
This role is essential for protecting the rights of the accused and ensuring a fair justice process in the criminal system.
