Overview

Under supervision, perform skilled maintenance work for the Blackhawk Technical College Facilities Department while utilizing journeyman or sub-journeyman skills. Proactively identify maintenance needs on the Blackhawk Technical College Campuses. Complete work orders in a timely manner, while also identifying additional maintenance needs to avoid more costly repairs at a later time. Specialize in one or more of the following areas: carpentry, plumbing, heating, painting, electrical, or refrigeration.

This position will be open until filled, with a first review date of March 9, 2026. After this date, the recruitment may close without further notice. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Responsibilities

Perform preventive maintenance, repair, and safety inspections on electrical appliances, motors, HVAC, and plumbing equipment. Perform journeyman-level carpentry work in the alteration, repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment. Perform repairs to interior and exterior windows and doors along with the associated frames and hardware. Operate and monitor building automation systems, making adjustments and/or repairs as needed. Perform minor drywall, plaster, or ceramic tile wall repairs and various flooring and roofing repairs.

Perform intricate mechanical maintenance and repair work on large heating and cooling systems; adjust, repair, and/or replace valves and worn or defective parts as needed. Maintain, repair, and clean circulating pumps, boilers, chillers, and other equipment related to heating and cooling systems. Install, repair, and service various HVAC systems, controls, and equipment; carry out prescribed preventive maintenance and repair programs on HVAC equipment.

Maintain chemical water treatment for the hot and chilled water systems. Maintain tools and equipment. Perform necessary surface preparation and apply paint, shellac, varnish, enamel, stain, or other protectives to various surfaces, using brush, spray, roller, cloth, or other means. Install, service repairs, and operate electrical equipment. Inventory, monitor, adjust and maintain appropriate stock levels through use of computer software.

Maintain grounds, campus roads, sidewalks, and parking lots including lawn mowing, trimming, irrigation, and snow removal for campus buildings. Operate Facilities vehicles and perform routine vehicle maintenance. Perform assistance as needed for various support services, such as room set up and transportation/distribution of deliveries. Maintain accurate reports and records of activities completed. Perform assistance as needed for mail services and serve as backup for Receiving.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Employees specialize in carpentry, plumbing, heating, painting, electrical or refrigeration and have one or more of the skills itemized below:

Considerable knowledge of the tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices used in the construction, repair, and maintenance of buildings. Considerable knowledge of the methods, tools, and equipment involved in mechanical maintenance. Considerable knowledge of the principles of heating, ventilating, and air conditioning systems as applied to building operations. Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices. Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment, mechanical devices, electric motors, and fixtures.

Considerable knowledge of the refrigeration cycle, boiler combustion, and HVAC system controls. Working knowledge of personal computers, spreadsheets, word processing, and maintenance management and building automation systems. Ability to make repairs on mechanical equipment and to analyze and diagnose trouble from malfunctions in mechanical equipment. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students and campus visitors. Ability to follow directives and to carry out work orders from oral and written instructions.
