OBJECTIVE

Under general direction of the Library Director, the Bookmobile and Outreach Services Coordinator leads Hedberg Public Library's mobile library service and related outreach efforts, bringing library materials, programs, technology, information, and connection directly to people throughout Janesville and the broader service community. This position is responsible for planning and operating bookmobile service, managing the bookmobile collection, developing community partnerships, coordinating outreach stops and events, evaluating service impact, supervising assigned staff, volunteers, and interns, and ensuring that mobile library services are welcoming, reliable, safe, and responsive to community needs.

The Bookmobile and Outreach Services Coordinator oversees public service, community engagement, collections, programs, routes, staff and volunteers, and data-informed service planning. The position represents the library at community locations and works across departments to provide inclusive, well-coordinated services that advance Hedberg Public Library’s mission.

Reports to:

Library Director

Has regular work contact with City employees, community groups, business community, non-profit agencies, other governmental agencies and the general public.

Supervises:
Bookmobile & Outreach Services Assistant.

1. Bookmobile Operations
  • Drives and operates the bookmobile safely at scheduled stops, events, schools, neighborhoods, senior communities, and partner locations.
  • Coordinates routes, setup, technology readiness, safety checks, vehicle condition, supplies, and daily follow-up.
  • Recommends schedule and service changes based on community need, usage data, staffing, and partner feedback.
2. Public Service
  • Provides welcoming service to patrons of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Assists with library cards, accounts, circulation, holds, readers’ advisory, basic reference, technology help, digital resources, and community information.
  • Connects patrons to library services, staff Services Coordinators, and community resources.
3. Collection Management
  • Maintains a current, attractive, inclusive, and responsive bookmobile collection.
  • Works with Collection Services to select, rotate, display, weed, and evaluate materials.
  • Uses data, patron requests, and staff observations to improve the collection.
4. Outreach and Community Engagement
  • Plans and supports outreach stops, bookmobile events, and community engagement activities.
  • Builds partnerships with schools, childcare providers, senior communities, social service agencies, neighborhood groups, and community organizations.
  • Represents HPL at community events and promotes services that reduce barriers to access.
5. Communication and Promotion
  • Coordinates bookmobile schedules, service updates, marketing requests, flyers, handouts, and public-facing information.
  • Communicates schedule changes, weather impacts, vehicle issues, and service interruptions to staff, partners, and patrons.
