OBJECTIVE:

Under general direction of the Recreation Director and guidance of the Recreation Supervisor and Recreation Programmers, the Recreation Intern is responsible for assisting with program and event coordination, execution and supervision in addition to general Division office assistance. This position is for eligible students in an approved internship program focused on Recreation Administration, Sports Management or related field.

RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports to:

Recreation Director

Has regular work contact with Department, Division and Office Heads, City employees, vendors, community groups, other governmental agencies and the general public.

* Recreation Programming:
Attends staff and other relevant meetings;
Plans, coordinates, schedules, implements and supervises recreation programs and events;
Shadows and and/or fills in for various seasonal positions as needed;
Completes program surveys and evaluations.

* Marketing & Promotion:
Designs, creates and distributes various publicity materials; creates social posts and responds to public inquiries, Obtains sponsor ships/donations;
Captures photographs of participants and activities at recreation programs and facilities;
Represents Division at promotional events.

* Administration:
Assists with office coverage, including proper phone protocol, participant registrations, facility bookings, equipment rental program oversight, scholarship program tracking, deposit collection and tracking, record keeping and preparing reports.

* Facility Operations & Maintenance:
Reviews operational manuals and maintenance procedures;
Shadows and assists with maintenance of facilities;
Collects beach water samples, Assists with program and facility supervision.

* Budgeting & Fiscal Management:
Familiarizes self with budgetary procedures; assists with employee payroll and timecard management; purchases supplies and distributes supplies and materials within given budgets.

* Personnel Supervision & Management:
Assists with hiring and evaluation of employees;
Solicits and helps with volunteer recruitment and management;
Assists with staff training sessions;
Responsible for proper documentation of incidents and injuries;
Understands policies and procedures.

* Major Project:
Plans and executes a major project. This project is determined together with student and supervisor input.

* General Duties:
Acts as a professional staff member; familiarizes self with city policies and procedures; other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & PRIOR

EXPERIENCE:

The requirements listed below are necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

* Must be 18 years of age or older.

* A minimum of 1 year of Recreation, parks or leisure services experience required.  

* Must be currently enrolled in an approved college or university internship program related to recreation, parks, leisure services or a closely aligned field.  

* A valid, state-issued driver's license at time of hire is required.  

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

The qualifications listed below are preferred, but not required to perform the essential duties of the position. The absence of these qualifications on a candidate's application does not preclude them from consideration.

  1.  A current child and Adult CPR, First Aid, and AED certification or willing to obtain.  

COMPETENCIES

For successful performance in this position, the incumbent must demonstrate the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors.

Knowledge:

* Thorough knowledge of modern office practices, including good filing, and record systems, grammar, proofreading, organization, and checking for accuracy of tasks.

* General knowledge of parks and recreation programs preferred.
