Position: Tax Auditor (Regulatory Auditor)

Overview

Starting Salary: $49,371.60. The salary indicated represents a base pay rate. If the candidate selected is eligible for a years-of-service pay differential, it will be added to the total compensation. A pay differential does not raise the base pay.

Job Location: This position is located at the Harry S Truman State Office Building, 301 W High Street, Jefferson City, Missouri.

Why is the work you do in this position important to Missouri?

This position serves Missourians by auditing surplus lines insurance producers to verify compliance with Missouri law. Over $86 million of surplus lines insurance premium tax was paid in 2025, which helps support state government services for Missourians.

Responsibilities
  • Review and analyze surplus lines insurance filings and agency records.
  • Reconcile annual surplus lines insurance premium tax reports.
  • Respond to emails and telephone inquiries from surplus lines insurance producers and consumers.
  • Assess compliance with statutory and regulatory standards.
  • Work both individually and as part of a small team of auditors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge through a Bachelor’s degree or work experience with specialization in accounting, finance, business, or closely related areas. An Associate’s degree or post-secondary course work in these areas will also help you succeed in this position.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, and other common computer applications.
  • Excellent customer service and organizational skills.
  • Ability to recognize and prioritize higher-priority work and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional or technical experience in accounting, auditing, tax preparation or closely related area.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at the same time.
