Job SummaryAssesses, plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates nursing care for surgical patients.
Core Responsibilities- Accepts patient care assignments as directed.
- Communicates with clinical area team members appropriately.
- Conducts all appropriate nursing aspects of patient assessment using subjective and objective data.
- Communicates effectively with patients to assess their knowledge of surgical/invasive procedures and expectations.
- Adheres to universal protocol.
- Involves patients or significant others in their plan of care, education, discharge planning, and prioritization of needs.
- Utilizes available teaching resources and refers patients/families as appropriate.
- Plans for patient care and intervenes by demonstrating basic nursing skills, observing and documenting patient responses, and maintaining a safe environment.
- Evaluates care by conducting ongoing assessments to identify effectiveness of interventions, performing post‑op calls after surgical procedures, and analyzing verbal responses from patients and families during hospitalization.
- Makes competent clinical decisions and involves management or other team members when necessary.
- Assists in all areas of surgical services as needed.
- Provides information to the physician regarding changes in patient conditions in a timely manner.
- Documents care given to patients and their responses in a timely manner.
- Administers medications, treatments, and nursing interventions per hospital policy.
- Applies evidence‑based practice and scientific knowledge to surgical nursing practice, ensuring care meets patient’s age‑specific and clinical needs.
- Works in a constant state of alertness and maintains safety.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing or an education equivalency for licensing.

Physical RequirementsConstant use of speech, standing, and walking; frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling of objects weighing 0–25 lbs; frequent sitting, reaching, and keyboard use/data entry; frequent visual, olfactory, and auditory tasks; occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling of objects weighing 25–50 lbs; occasional lifting/moving of patients; occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping, and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements; occasional driving; rare crawling and running.
