The school nurse assists in providing the fullest educational opportunity for students by minimizing absence due to illness and creating a climate of health and well‑being in the schools.

• Promote public health by serving as health consultant to students, parents, and staff.
• Assist teachers in teaching units of health instruction.
• Interpret the policies and procedures for emergency care of illness and injury; provide such care as needed while students are under school jurisdiction.
• Observe the school environment for student health.
• Establish screening procedures to assess the total health status of all students.

• Organize work and plan well in advance for scheduled activities.
• Make constructive suggestions in the development and revision of objectives, standards, policies, and procedures for the health program.
• Develop and maintain records, reports, and statistical information.
• Communicate effectively with administration and other school personnel.

• Maintain positive interpersonal relationships with students.
• Maintain positive interpersonal relationships with educational staff.
• Maintain positive interpersonal relationships with parents/guardians.
• Promote and foster communication with physicians, dentists, and community agencies.

• Participate in professional growth activities.
• Follow the policies and procedures of the school district.
• Lead in establishing, revising, and improving professional standards of school nursing.
• Demonstrate professional nursing skills, judgment, and complete duties promptly and accurately.
