basic function

the school of information at kent state university, a carnegie r1 institution, invites applications for a full-time, non–tenure track faculty position in public librarianship at the rank of assistant professor / lecturer, beginning fall 2026.

additional basic function – if applicable

the school offers a nationally-ranked, ala-accredited master of library and information science (mlis) degree and is committed to educating innovative, community-engaged information professionals and library advocates. We seek a dynamic educator with expertise in public librarianship and a strong commitment to inclusive, equitable library services.

examples of duties

teach graduate courses in public librarianship, which may include:

  • public library management and leadership
  • community engagement, outreach, and social services
  • programming and services for diverse populations
  • youth, teen, and/or adult services
  • intellectual freedom and public library ethics
  • information literacy
  • collection development
  • contribute to curriculum development in the mlis program
  • advise and mentor students pursuing careers in public libraries
  • engage in service to the school, university, and the profession

the successful candidate will also be required to teach in our mlis core curriculum.

minimum qualifications
  • master’s degree from an ala-accredited program (although degrees in related disciplines may be considered)
  • significant professional experience in public libraries or closely related settings
  • demonstrated excellence or strong potential in teaching
preferred qualifications – if applicable
  • doctorate in library and information science or a related field (preferred)
  • prior experience teaching online preferred

working conditions / physical requirements

light work-exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Incumbent must be able to communicate with others. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus occasionally.

this is a renewable appointment with an initial term of 1 year. Per the university’s ntt collective bargaining agreement, the teaching load is 5-5 and profession
