Position Summary
We are seeking one (1) technician to assist with a project focusing on wild turkey reproductive ecology. The project will specifically examine the chronology of turkey gobbling, turkey movements, space use, nesting, and brood rearing in relation to hunting on the landscape. The role of the technician will involve nest monitoring, radio telemetry, habitat sampling, acoustic surveying, data recording, and processing.
The technician will work both independently and as part of a small crew on the Savannah River Site in Aiken, South Carolina.
- Nest monitoring – 25%
- Radio telemetry – 45%
- Data entry – 10%
- Vegetation sampling – 10%
- ARU maintenance – 10%
- B.S. in wildlife ecology or a related field (preferred); competitive candidates may have related experience.
- Previous field experience with radio telemetry and wildlife tracking.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Strong interpersonal skills; daily interaction with U.S. Forest Service personnel is required.
- Ability to work early mornings, late nights, and weekends when necessary.
- Experience operating 4WD vehicles.
- Experience with vegetation sampling and surveys.
- Experience climbing tree stands and no fear of heights.
Requires working early mornings in potentially unfavorable weather conditions (cold and wet). Must be able to lift 50 lbs, operate 4WD vehicles, and use climbing tree stands.
