Pre-Paving Site Preparation Leader
Responsible for leading pre-paving site preparation ahead of the main paving crew. This position involves managing setup logistics, ensuring pre-job site readiness—including utility locates and traffic control—and laying the groundwork to enable seamless, efficient, and safe daily paving operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Site Preparation & Utility Management:
Coordinate and verify utility locates (Call 811/One-Call), mark out work zones, identify potential hazards, and ensure all pre-paving site conditions meet safety and quality standards. - Blueprint & Specs Reading:
Read blueprints, grade sheets, and job specifications to set up accurate paving lines, elevations, and layout points. - Pre-Paving Logistics & Scheduling:
Manage scheduling for setup crews, early-phase equipment mobilization, traffic control logistics, and pre-paving material deliveries. - Pre-Paving Quantity Verification:
Calculate asphalt, tack coat, and subgrade material quantities needed prior to the main crew's arrival. - Communication & Hand-Off:
Serve as the primary liaison between project managers, inspectors, subcontractors, and the main Asphalt Paving Foreman to ensure a smooth transition from setup to paving.
Requirements
- Experience:
Minimum of 5 years of experience in the asphalt paving/highway construction field, with demonstrated leadership in site prep or crew oversight. - Licensing:
Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or be willing to obtain one. - Safety
Certifications: - OSHA 10-hour certification required (OSHA 30-hour preferred).
- First Aid and CPR certification required.
- Technical
Skills:
Strong understanding of site setup, grade checking, utility markouts, and basic traffic control (ATSSA certification is a plus). - Communication:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills to coordinate with utility locators, inspectors, and crew members.
