Position OverviewThe mission of the Louisiana Veterans Home is to primarily serve the Veterans’ population of Louisiana through the provision of medical, restorative, and rehabilitative service in an atmosphere of respect and compassion. The primary objective of the home is to provide quality nursing care to eligible veterans with the ultimate goal of returning the veterans to the highest possible levels of physical and mental capacity.
This position is located in the Nursing Department of the SW Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings, Louisiana.
Full‑time appointment as a Nursing Assistant 1 or Nursing Assistant 2, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s). Specific information on salary ranges, minimum qualifications and job concepts for each level can be found in the Civil Service system.
Pay and Shift DifferentialsBase pay (Special Entrance Rate): $13.74 an hour for Nursing Assistant 1 plus $5.00 an hour physically worked
; $14.70 an hour for Nursing Assistant 2 plus $5.00 an hour physically worked
. Shift differentials (per hour physically worked):
- Shift 1 (Weekends, Holidays, Weekend Holidays): $2.50
- Shift 2 (Weekdays): $2.50
- Shift 2 (Weekends, Holidays, Weekend Holidays): $3.00
- Shift 3 (Weekdays): $2.50
- Shift 3 (Weekends, Holidays, Weekend Holidays): $3.00
- Six months of experience or training in patient care; OR
- Possession of a current Certified Nursing Assistant certificate; OR
- Completion of an accredited Registered Nursing, Practical Nursing, Medical Assistant, or Emergency Medical Technician program.
Measure temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, height and weight; record in patient’s medical record.
Assist with documenting admission of new patients on medical record.
Provide care such as ambulating, feeding, bathing, positioning and lifting.
May sterilize equipment and supplies.
Distribute clean linen; wash, dry, sort, fold and store patients’ clothing.
Collect, label and transport laboratory specimens as assigned; collect and file diagnostic test results.
Observe patient condition and report changes to charge nurse.
Transport patients to examinations, clinics, or recreational sites.
May be required to provide care to patients with infectious diseases.
Clean rooms and change bed linens.
Perform procedures such as enemas and skin care as directed by a professional nurse.
Perform all duties that may be performed by the unit aide.
Successfully complete training programs such as CPR, First Aid, infection control, JCAHO requirements.
Maintain any necessary certifications.
Work may involve shift work.
SupervisionGeneral supervision from a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, Nursing Assistant 2, or other higher level personnel. No supervision exercised.
