The mission of the Louisiana Veterans Home is to primarily serve the Veterans’ population of Louisiana through the provision of medical, restorative, and rehabilitative service in an atmosphere of respect and compassion. The primary objective of the home is to provide quality nursing care to eligible veterans with the ultimate goal of returning the veterans to the highest possible levels of physical and mental capacity.
This position is located in the Nursing Department of the SW Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings, Louisiana. It is a full‑time appointment that may be filled from the LPN 1 /2/3 career progression group, depending on the experience level of the selected applicant. Salary ranges and minimum qualifications are detailed in the 'Job Specifications' on the LA Careers Civil Service website.
CompensationHourly base pay (Special Entrance Rate) plus $7.00 per hour physically worked:
- LPN 1: $19.48
- LPN 2: $20.84
- LPN 3: $22.30
Shift differentials (per hour physically worked) are:
- 1st shift (weekends, holidays, weekend holidays): $3.00
- 2nd shift (weekdays): $3.00
- 2nd shift (weekends, holidays, weekend holidays): $4.00
- 3rd shift (weekdays): $4.00
- 3rd shift (weekends, holidays, weekend holidays): $5.00
- Provide basic nursing care to patients/clients in stable conditions and predictable situations.
- Observe patients for changes in physical and/or mental status or behavior and report significant changes.
- Obtain specimens for laboratory testing as assigned.
- Takes vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure.
- Administer medication and treatments in accordance with policies and procedures.
- Transcribe physicians’ orders and record medication and patient’s condition on charts and other records.
- Receive and give change of shift reports.
- Request stock drugs, medications, and supplies as assigned.
- Administer CPR in emergency situations.
- Admit, transfer, and discharge patients.
- Gather information about patient’s past and current physical and mental status.
- May administer oral and parenteral medication as prescribed by physician and document procedure.
- Apply dressings, ointments, and other treatments as ordered and document procedure.
- Assist physicians with routine examinations and treatments.
- Bath, feed, and make patients comfortable.
- Perform individual and group health teaching as assigned.
Minimum qualifications:
- Possession of a current Louisiana Practical Nurse license, a temporary permit, or a multi‑state license issued by a Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC/eNLC) state.
