– Job Description Position Summary
A Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher educates students in practical life skills, career readiness, and academic concepts related to nutrition, food preparation, child development, personal finance, textiles, wellness, housing, and consumer education. The teacher creates engaging classroom and laboratory experiences that prepare students for independent living, family responsibilities, and careers in related industries.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Develop and deliver lesson plans aligned with state and district curriculum standards
- Teach courses such as nutrition, culinary arts, parenting, child development, financial literacy, sewing/textiles, wellness, and career readiness
- Supervise hands‑on classroom and laboratory activities safely and effectively
- Assess student performance through projects, assignments, tests, and demonstrations
- Maintain classroom management and a positive learning environment
- Integrate technology and career‑based learning into instruction
- Support student participation in leadership and career organizations such as Family, Career and Community Leaders of America
- Maintain classroom equipment, supplies, and inventory
- Communicate with parents, administrators, and support staff regarding student progress
- Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school events
- Ensure compliance with school policies and safety regulations
- Bachelor's degree in Family and Consumer Sciences, Education, or a related field
- Valid state teaching certification/licensure
- Knowledge of instructional strategies and classroom management techniques
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds
- Previous teaching or student teaching experience
- Certification in culinary arts, nutrition, or child development
- Experience with career and technical education (CTE) programs
- CPR/First Aid certification
- Instructional planning
