Job Description
Paraprofessional

  • TITLE: Paraprofessional – Building / Classroom Instructional / ELL (English Language Learners)
  • SUMMARY: Assist certified staff in daily classroom activities. Supervise students as necessary both in and out of the classroom.
  • REPORTS TO: Building Administration and/or Teachers
  • PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Minimum High School diploma / AA degree preferred
    • Meet the Highly Qualified requirements set by Federal and State guidelines:
      • Successful completion of a formal State Para Professional Assessment Test
      • Complete an Associate Degree or higher
      • Complete two years of college with a minimum of 32 credits
    • Previous experience working with children preferred
    • Ability to perform duties in accordance with general educational ethical requirements of the Jerome School District and the State Department of Education
  • DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Provide and/or assist with appropriate supervision for children on the playground in various weather conditions, bus lines, lunch rooms, and other assigned areas and during emergency drills, assemblies, and field trips as directed.
    • Work with individual students or small groups of students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
    • Assist the teacher in implementing special strategies planned for reinforcing material or skills.
    • Alert the regular teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
    • Serve as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
    • Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully certified teachers.
    • Exhibit adequate communication skills (i.e. telephone, written messages, public relations, etc.).
    • Operate and care for equipment as needed.
    • Other duties as may be assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently stands, walks and sits. The employee may repeat the same hand, arm or finger motion repeatedly. The employee may occasionally push or lift up to 50 lbs, such as boxes of books and AV/VCR carts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as ability to read handwritten or typed material, and the ability to adjust focus.

    The position requires the individual to successfully meet multiple demands and interactions with the public and other staff. The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate to loud. Duties are performed indoors and outdoors.
Terms of Employment
  • Determined yearly by academic calendar, 7.75 hours per day (does not include unpaid lunch). This position shall be considered in all respects employment at will and the terms set forth in this job description shall not create a property right and are set forth only to advise the employee of when and what types of services will be required by the District.
  • Continued employment as a Para Professional is contingent upon receiving the Highly Qualified Status that is required of all Para Professionals working in a Title 1 school.

Evaluation

Performance of this position will be evaluated periodically by the Building Principal or a designee in conformance with District policy relating to evaluation of classified employees.
