Job Description

Job Title: School Counselor K-12

Summary: Utilizing advocacy, collaboration, and leadership, school counselors promote student success, provide preventative services and respond to identified student needs.

Reports To: Building Principal

Professional Requirements
  • Valid Idaho Certificate with appropriate endorsement for this position.
  • Previous experience in counseling preferred.
  • Organizational and leadership skills.
  • High-level communication skills, including individual and group mediation, and problem solving with staff, parents, and community.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to perform duties in accordance with the general educational ethical requirements of the Jerome School District and the State Department of Education, and to abide by ethical standards for professional licensure.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality and mandatory reporting requirements.
  • Work with students on a group or individual basis to solve personal problems such as home and family relations, health and emotional adjustment, academics, and attendance.
  • Identify appropriate coping skills, feelings, symptoms of stress, abuse, and signs of mental health diagnoses or addiction.
  • Respond to crisis situations when appropriate; serve as an active member of the district-wide crisis team, leading in the development and implementation of suicide intervention and threat assessment protocols.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented group activities to meet student needs and school-wide goals.
  • Remain readily available to students, providing counseling that supports social/emotional development, personal growth, self-understanding, maturation, and success in school (including problem-solving skills, attendance, academic, and career planning as appropriate).
  • Conduct school-wide counseling activities in the classroom.
  • Partner with parents to encourage social emotional development and academic success.
  • Work with teachers and staff members to familiarize them with the counseling services offered and integrate counseling activities into the regular education curricula.
  • Refer to appropriate community resources and follow up.
  • Handle interruptions, prioritize work, and complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Evaluate and suggest revisions to the building counseling program as needed.
  • Manage or participate in student support programs such as 504, McKinney‑Vento, and intervention teams assigned by the Building Administrator.
  • Utilize community and district resources to support families in financial hardship.
  • Attend parent‑teacher conferences when requested.
  • Perform any other duties as directed by the Building Administrator.
  • At the elementary level, teach life skills to students through classroom presentations, group counseling, and individual counseling (e.g., social skills, crisis management, grief, emotional regulation).
  • Collaborate with students, teachers, and parents to explain resources and student needs, providing young students with opportunities to feel successful.
  • At the middle school level, reinforce life skills learned at the elementary level and develop Student Individualized Graduation Plans, including scheduling student courses.
  • Meet with teachers and parents, provide referrals for outside resources, and offer more individual time for problem solving, issues, and social skills.
  • At the high school level, obtain and disseminate occupational information, advise students and parents on using test results for college and career planning, organize career information events such as “Career Day,” and provide information regarding college, military, and life style decisions.
