Overview

At Fearless, this Consultant collaborates with cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality, secure, and maintainable systems across all stages of the software and data lifecycle. This role is instrumental in delivering secure, efficient, and scalable solutions that directly impact the success of projects, teams, and organizational goals. This role will possess and/or develop the skills to span the domains of software development, data engineering, infrastructure automation, information assurance, and AI/ML integration at a practical application level of proficiency.

This Consultant role will work on projects that allow them to contribute across the entire technology stack — software, infrastructure, data, AI, and security — to ensure quality, speed, and innovation in delivery.

• Backend Engineering:
  Develop and maintain backend services that manage business logic, search functionality, and data retrieval. Support two distinct backend architectures.
• Databases, Storage & Data Pipelines:
  Work across multiple data stores and access patterns. AWS Aurora (Postgre
  
  SQL) for structured data;
  Redis for caching;
  Amazon Dynamo
  
  DB for Career Navigator training and user data;
  Amazon S3 for file storage and training data ingestion. Support ETPL refresh processes. Lead and maintain the transition from manual CSV uploads to real-time integrations via the Credential Engine API. Ensure data accuracy, performance, and scalability.
• Testing & Quality Assurance:
  Maintain automated testing pipelines (Jest for backend, Pytest for Career Navigator backend, Cypress for UI testing). Support regression testing and validation of integrations and deployments.
• Infrastructure, Hosting & Cloud Operations:
  Support a hybrid infrastructure model (AWS EC2 + ALB; AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Cloud Watch). Manage infrastructure using Terraform. Monitor application health, logs, and performance using Cloud Watch and centralized logging.
• APIs & Integrations:
  Integrate and maintain external APIs (Career One Stop  API; O
  * NET Web Services; Mailchimp; Contentful CMS). Support internal API communication between frontend interfaces and backend services using Express and FastAPI endpoints.
• Dev Ops, Security & Tooling:
  Support CI/CD workflows (Circle
  
  CI transitioning to Git Hub Actions; AWS Code Build). Execute and support manual deployments as needed. Manage infrastructure updates with Terraform. Ensure platform security and observability using Winston and AWS Cloud Watch; HTTPS via AWS Certificate Manager;
  Helmet middleware;

• Frontend Collaboration & User
  
  Experience:
  
  Support frontend applications built with Next.js/React, React v17;
  Tailwind CSS and Material UI. Ensure alignment with NJWDS/USWDS design systems and Material Design standards. Collaborate with designers using Figma and Contentful for content modeling. Maintain accessibility, responsiveness, and performance.

• Minimum 6-7 years of professional software engineering experience.
• Backend & API Development: 5+ years building and maintaining backend services with Node.js + Express (production experience), and Python (APIs or data services; FastAPI preferred). Proven experience designing and supporting RESTful APIs in live systems.
• Cloud & Infrastructure: 3-5 years in AWS environments (EC2, ALB, Lambda, API Gateway, S3, Cloud Watch); hands-on with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform preferred).
