Job Description

We are looking for a detail-oriented woodworker to join the studio as we prepare to move into a larger workspace in the Jersey City area. This role begins as an 8–12 week contract and may grow into a long-term position for the right person.

During this period, the primary focus of the role will be producing custom frame mouldings. This includes milling hardwood using a jointer and table saw, then shaping clean, consistent profiles to precise dimensions. In this work, a careful and steady pace matters more than speed, since rushing can waste material and compromise quality.

The studio is based in Jersey City, with convenient access from New York City — about 25 minutes from Midtown NYC and 15 minutes from the World Trade Center via PATH.

Compensation

$20–$25/hour, depending on experience.
Initial 8–12 week contract, with potential for long-term hire.

Responsibilities
  • Mill hardwood stock using a jointer and table saw
  • Produce frame mouldings to accurate dimensions
  • Cut clean rabbets and miters on a table saw
  • Refine and fit joints with hand tools, especially a bench plane
  • Execute glue-ups and spline reinforcement
  • Safe and accurate operation of a table saw and jointer
  • Strong hand-tool skills, especially with a bench plane
  • Ability to sharpen blades and tune planes independently
  • Patience and consistency when working with hardwood
  • Ability to work to tight tolerances
  • Strong attention to grain direction, material behavior, and finishing quality
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and comfortable working independently
Preferred for higher pay consideration
  • Ability to refine milled parts with hand tools to final dimensions
  • Ability to execute clean and accurate miter glue-ups using strap clamps
  • Understanding of grain orientation, stock planning, and material efficiency
