Post‑Surgery Recovery Aide – New Jersey
Post‑surgery recovery aides help clients safely recover at home after orthopedic, cardiac, or abdominal procedures. These assignments are short‑term and focused on preventing complications and supporting safe recovery.

- Requirements: NJ CHHA certification, basic first aid, and willingness to work short‑term shifts
- Safe bed‑to‑chair, chair‑to‑toilet, and chair‑to‑standing transfers using body mechanics and equipment (gait belts, transfer boards, grab bars)
- Walker and cane assistance, reinforcing PT instructions
- Stair negotiation and guided assistance in the home
- Weight‑bearing compliance for hip and knee replacement patients and reporting violations
- Observe incision sites during bathing and personal care for redness, swelling, drainage, or warmth
- Report infection signs or wound complications immediately to the Nurse Care Manager
- Ensure dressings remain intact and dry between visits
- Maintain positioning that protects the surgical site
- Timely medication reminders according to the prescribed schedule
- Organization of pill boxes and coordination with pharmacies for refills
- Monitor side effects such as nausea, dizziness, unusual bleeding and report to the care team
- Document medication adherence
- Assess and modify the environment to remove hazards, clear pathways, verify grab bars and non‑slip footwear
- Provide standby assistance during all transfers and ambulation
- Nighttime supervision for clients who need to reach the bathroom during high‑risk hours
- Implement fall‑prevention plan in line with nursing instructions
- Encourage and remind clients to complete prescribed home exercise programs
- Supervise exercises without substituting for the PT
- Report exercise tolerance and pain to the Nurse Care Manager and PT team
- Obtain post‑surgical care plan from hospital team
- Conduct a home safety pre‑assessment
- Brief the aide on mobility restrictions, warning signs, and surgical specifics
- Establish communication protocols with the nurse agency and PT team
- W‑2 employee with workers’ compensation and liability coverage
- Consistent scheduling, paid orientation, and ongoing training supervised by licensed RNs
- Competitive hourly pay and flexible shifts (4–12 hrs) with potential for long‑term care cases
