Mechanical Design Engineer

Job Summary

Mechanical Designer (Engineer) – As a Mechanical Design Engineer you will be working closely with other designers to draft drawings in Solid Works, primarily to specifications that are detailed, accurate, and visually appealing. You will follow company Solid Works guidelines for all processes, including naming conventions, data storage, and layout standards. The ideal candidate will have Solid Works or engineering experience, excellent communication skills, and work well within a team environment.

Responsible for creating 3D CAD models and fabrication drawings of components and assemblies in coordination with the company’s design and mechanical engineering team.

• Proper interpretation of design specifications, drawings, and schematics.
• Create and maintain engineering CAD models in Solid Works.
• Provide engineering support by creating parts and assemblies in Solid Works, along with detailed fabrication and installation drawings; draft accurate, attractive drawings from given specifications.
• Function as part of a Product Design Team following guidance provided by senior design and project engineers; perform design studies, tolerance stack‑ups, and drafting checks.
• Coordinate with the company’s mechanical engineers for structural analysis and FEA when required; work closely with other members of the drafting team and design partners to verify detail accuracy.
• Track all time spent on projects accurately.
• Maintain engineering bill of material.

• Proficient in Solid Works with experience designing parts, assemblies, and creating drawings.
• Proficient in GD&T and various tolerance analysis methods.
• Strong knowledge of sheet metal design and fabrication.
• Strong knowledge of design for CNC machining.
• Experience in design of machinery components and systems.
• Familiarity with motion control systems is strongly preferred.
• Experience with computer-aided drafting techniques and standard engineering practices.
• Familiarity with engineering terminology.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and word processing software.
• Good time management skills and high work ethic.
• Positive contributor to team participation.
• Focused, methodical with good analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Familiarity with machine shop practices and associated equipment is a plus.
• Ability to handle multiple activities to meet target dates.
• Able to read and comprehend instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Good communication skills and ability to work in teams.

• 4‑year degree in Mechanical Engineering/Engineering Technology or
• 2‑year degree and 2+ years of experience in Mechanical Design or
• 4+ years of experience in Mechanical Design.

• The position is based at Aerolab’s main facility in Jessup, MD.
• Limited off‑site travel may be required.
