Systems Engineer, Mechanical Engineer
POSITION PURPOSE
The Global Advanced Digital Engineering team is Baltimore Aircoil Company’s (BAC) engine, combining domain SME, software, and automation expertise to build modular, scalable, and reusable engineering capability, including models, methods, tools, CAD and simulation environments, workflows, and digital architectures that improve speed, quality, and consistency of engineering outcomes across BAC’s products, applications, and digital ecosystems.
POSITION PURPOSE
The Staff Engineer, Advanced Thermal Modeling is responsible for developing and scaling thermal modeling capability in accordance with the overall thermal modeling strategy across BAC’s product and application space, spanning unit-level physics, system-level performance, and cost-of-ownership modeling. This role translates thermodynamic and heat transfer expertise into reusable modeling architectures, simulation tools, and validated methods that inform design, product, and customer decisions.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Develop and scale thermal modeling frameworks spanning unit-level physics and system-level performance across BAC’s cooling technologies, including evaporative, hybrid, adiabatic, and dry systems
- Translate thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and heat transfer knowledge into reusable models, simulation architectures, and prediction tools and rating program logic deployed across engineering and business workflows
- Implement and mature scalable modeling approaches aligned with defined standards, ensuring consistent and comparable performance evaluation across products, applications, and operating conditions
- Build and maintain unit and system-level models that integrate thermal performance, operating conditions, and cost-of-ownership metrics, including electrical consumption, water usage, and capital considerations
- Own execution of model validation, including correlation between experimental test data and model predictions, ensuring models are grounded in physical validation and aligned with BAC product performance and certification requirements
- Lead and support lab and field testing activities, including heat exchanger and full system thermal testing, to validate and refine models
- Support engagements with key internal stakeholders and external partners to develop unit and system-level performance and cost models supporting application design, nonstandard configurations, and solution optimization
- Identify opportunities to improve thermal performance and product efficiency through modeling insights, informing design trade-offs and innovation efforts
- Develop and improve scalable simulation tools and workflows that increase throughput and consistency across BAC
- Monitor relevant emerging technologies, modeling techniques, and industry developments, integrating relevant advancements into BAC digital engineering capability
- Communicate complex modeling results and engineering insights through structured reports, technical documentation, and presentations across technical and business audiences
NATURE AND SCOPE
The Staff Engineer, Advanced Thermal Modeling reports to the Principal Engineer, Advanced Thermal Modeling, and operates across BAC’s product portfolio, applications space, and global regions, requiring close coordination with NPI, CPI, Advanced Applications, and Global and Regional business teams, balancing deep technical contribution with cross-functional impact.
This role is accountable for the delivery of accurate, validated models and insights that support product, application, and customer decisions, and developing scalable modeling frameworks, simulation tools, and methods that compound engineering effectiveness across BAC. This role operates with a high degree of autonomy within defined modeling frameworks and standards.
