MAIN PURPOSEThe main purpose of the X-LoS Legal Counsel role (reporting directly to the Senior Manager: Legal Counsel & Compliance and ultimately to the Africa General Counsel) is to provide legal advice to the firm, consider, advise on and resolve legal and regulatory matters, review and negotiate various agreements and documents, consider legal issues and provide general legal support to the lines of service and perform related risk and quality roles, including assistance with compliance related activities.
Given PwC’s strategic objective to become more digitally-enabled, this role will include focus the developing technologies of the firm and the impact which laws and regulations, both local and global, may have on the achievement of this strategic objective.
- 2 – 4 years’ PQE experience in an internal compliance department, alternatively in the commercial department of a law firm with a proven track record;
Experience with in a compliance department of a regulated entity will be advantageous; - Practical experience in legal drafting, analysis and review;
- In-depth knowledge, understanding and ability to implement such knowledge of the relevant legislation and regulations (including, but not limited to, the Companies Act, King IV, FICA, POPIA and PAIA);
- The ability to identify, think critically, articulate potential legal and/or regulatory concerns and to solve problems efficiently and practically;
- Curious and focussed on finding solutions to complex problems;
- Self-motivated, pro-active and committed to delivery;
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to interact with People at various levels and with partners across Africa;
- Strong interpersonal skills;
- Ability to multi-task and prioritise;
- Post-graduate studies completed with a focus on compliance and/ or commercial law (advantageous but not a pre-requisite)
- Ensure adherence to the legal standards of industry-specific legislation and regulations, general legislation and regulations and in-house policies and processes and assist with commenting on draft legislation and regulations;
- Driving the completion of the compliance risk assessments in respect of the relevant PwC Network Standards;
- Perform ongoing compliance monitoring across various PwC entities across Africa;
- Work with PwC entities across Africa on risk ratings, findings, remedial and/ or corrective actions;
- Preparing reports on compliance;
- Preparing communication to the business in respect of compliance and other legal and regulatory matters and assist with training of People;
- Developing and/ or revising existing company policies;
- Providing guidance and advice in respect of compliance matters across various PwC entities across Africa;
- Provide strategic and practical legal advice on various legal and regulatory matters;
- Review, draft and negotiate a variety of contracts and support on internal special projects;
- Conduct legal research and attend to opinion writing.
