To provide strategic legal leadership ensuring the organization operates within legal and regulatory frameworks while mitigating legal risks. The role oversees all 1st line legal functions, advising on legal implications of business decisions, and providing expert counsel to protect the organization’s interests and support its strategic objectives.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
Strategic Legal Leadership and Governance
- Develop and implement the organization’s legal strategy in alignment with corporate objectives
- Provide strategic legal advice to the Board, Executive Committee, and senior management on significant corporate matters
- Lead the development and implementation of the legal governance framework
- Drive legal thought leadership across the organization
- Support the Board on corporate governance matters, ensuring compliance with regulations and best practices
- Participate in and contribute to strategic business decisions, providing legal perspective on opportunities and risks
Enterprise-Wide Legal Risk Management
- Design and implement legal risk management frameworks and methodologies for all business divisions
- Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate legal risks across the organization
- Establish legal risk appetite and tolerance levels appropriate for different business divisions
- Develop escalation mechanisms for significant legal risks
- Partner with Risk and Compliance departments to ensure integrated approach to risk management
- Create regular legal risk reports for senior management and the Board
- Support all divisions in developing specific legal risk controls
Cross-Divisional Legal Advisory and Support
- Establish a business partner model to provide specialized legal support to each division
- Ensure consistent, high-quality legal advice to all business units
- Design standardized legal processes that can be customized for divisional needs
- Lead the review and negotiation of significant contracts, agreements, and partnerships
- Provide legal interpretation of regulatory requirements affecting various divisions
- Support new product development and business initiatives across divisions with timely legal guidance
- Advise on legal implications of strategic initiatives and transactions
Litigation and Dispute Management
- Develop the strategy for management of all litigation and disputes across divisions
- Oversee the selection and management of external legal counsel when required
- Ensure consistent approach to dispute resolution throughout the organization
- Implement litigation prevention strategies and early warning systems
- Support divisions in managing specific litigation matters affecting their operations
- Develop and maintain a litigation database to track cases and ensure knowledge sharing
- Conduct post-case analyses to identify process improvements
Regulatory Compliance and Stakeholder Management
- Monitor and interpret legal and regulatory developments affecting the organization
- Lead the organization’s response to significant regulatory changes
- Establish and maintain relationships with key regulatory bodies
- Represent the organization in industry legal forums and discussions
- Collaboration with Compliance to ensure integrated regulatory management
- Support divisional compliance with specific industry regulations
- Develop and implement training on key legal and regulatory topics for all divisions
People Leadership and Organizational Effectiveness
- Build, lead and develop the legal team to ensure excellent service delivery to all divisions
- Establish clear roles and responsibilities within the legal function
- Implement performance management systems aligned with organizational objectives
- Manage the department’s budget and resources effectively
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement and innovation within the legal function
- Develop succession plans for key legal roles
- Promote collaboration between the legal team and other departments
WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO THE TABLE?
- Law degree
- 8-10 years’ relevant experience, with at least 5 years in a senior legal position
- Previous experience leading legal functions in similar industry
- Experience working with boards and executive committees
- Strong track record in corporate and commercial law
