The Diesel Technician will be responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and servicing fleet vehicles and heavy-duty trucks within the Mayfair Gearbox Fleet Division. The role requires strong mechanical expertise, the ability to work efficiently under pressure, and a commitment to delivering high-quality workmanship to minimise downtime for fleet clients.
- Key Responsibilities
Diagnostics & Fault Finding - Perform accurate diagnostics on diesel engines and related systems.
- Identify faults in engines, gearboxes, clutches, diffs, air systems, braking systems, and driveline components.
- Use diagnostic tools and equipment to assess mechanical and electronic faults.
- Provide accurate feedback to the foreman/service advisor for quoting and repair planning.
Repairs & Maintenance
- Conduct repairs on heavy-duty diesel engines and components.
- Perform gearbox removals and refits when required.
- Replace or repair clutches, differentials, prop shafts, turbochargers, and fuel system components.
- Carry out preventative maintenance and scheduled fleet servicing.
- Ensure all repairs are completed to Mayfair Gearbox standards.
- Fleet Support
- Assist with breakdown diagnostics and urgent fleet repairs.
- Ensure minimal downtime for fleet clients through efficient workmanship.
- Maintain service schedules and complete jobs within agreed turnaround times.
Quality Control
- Ensure correct repair procedures and torque specifications are followed.
- Conduct final inspections before releasing vehicles.
- Minimise comebacks by maintaining high standards of workmanship.
- Report any additional faults discovered during repairs.
- Workshop Operations
- Maintain accurate time recording and job card updates.
- Use workshop tools and equipment correctly and responsibly.
- Maintain cleanliness and organisation of work area.
- Assist other technicians and apprentices when required.
- Health & Safety Compliance
- Follow all workshop safety policies and procedures.
- Ensure correct use of PPE at all times.
- Operate lifting equipment and machinery safely.
- Maintain a clean and hazard-free working environment.
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / Grade 12 (preferred).
- Trade Test qualification as a Diesel Mechanic (essential or advantage).
- Minimum 3–5 years experience as a Diesel Technician in a commercial or fleet workshop.
- Experience working on heavy-duty trucks (essential).
- Valid driver’s license (Code 14 / EC advantage).
Technical Knowledge Required
- Diesel engine diagnostics and repairs.
- Manual and automated truck gearboxes (advantage).
- Clutch systems and driveline components.
- Air brake systems and suspension systems.
- Fuel systems (injectors, pumps, common rail systems).
- Preventative maintenance and fleet servicing procedures.
