Under limited supervision, the Senior Oracle SQL Data Analyst develops, maintains, and supports SQL solutions for operational reporting, research, executive decision‑making, legislative reporting, and strategic initiatives. This position primarily works with large, normalized Oracle transactional databases and is responsible for extracting, validating, analyzing, automating, and maintaining operational data.
Unlike a traditional Business Intelligence or dashboard development role, approximately 70–80% of the work involves writing Oracle SQL and PL/SQL directly against transactional databases. The analyst must independently analyze business requirements, determine the appropriate database tables, relationships, and business rules needed to answer complex questions, and develop SQL solutions from scratch without relying on pre‑built analytical tables, semantic models, visual query builders, or AI‑generated SQL.
PrimaryDuties And Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and optimize complex Oracle SQL and PL/SQL programs.
- Write simple and complex SQL queries from scratch against normalized Oracle transactional databases.
- Analyze business requirements and determine the appropriate tables, relationships, joins, and business rules needed to answer complex business questions.
- Extract, validate, transform, and analyze operational data for reporting, research, grants, and executive requests.
- Develop and maintain automated SQL processes, scheduled database jobs, and recurring data refreshes.
- Troubleshoot SQL scripts, automated jobs, and data quality issues.
- Create efficient, reusable, and well‑documented SQL code.
- Support recurring operational reports, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), legislative reporting, and research initiatives.
- Collaborate with business users to understand reporting needs and communicate analytical findings.
- Support Tableau dashboards and other data visualization initiatives as needed.
- Required skills (minimum 5 years):
- Oracle SQL development against transactional databases
- Writing complex SQL (joins, CTEs, subqueries, CASE, aggregate and analytic functions)
- Normalized relational database design and table relationships
- Oracle PL/SQL (procedures, functions, packages, views)
- Highly desired skills:
- SQL job scheduling and automated database processes (minimum 3 years)
- SQL troubleshooting, query optimization, and data validation (min 3 years)
- Translating business requirements into SQL solutions (min 5 years)
- Operational reporting and data analysis (min 3 years)
- Tableau or other data visualization software
- Experience with criminal justice or other large transactional database environments
