Description

Job Summary:

Plans, coordinates and directs the daily operations of a specific shift on a clinical unit. Supervises staff and facilitates communication with physicians and internal administrators to provide optimal patient and family‑centered care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Leadership and Mentorship

  • Mentor other registered nurses in the role and functions of charge nurse.
  • Lead and coordinate team behavior between staff members and actively foster development of leadership skills in others.
  • Provide direction and guidance to less experienced staff concerning policies, scheduling, assignments, organizational skills and daily operations.
  • Complete performance reviews with nurse manager input as appropriate.
  • Incorporate Synergy model for care in nurse‑patient assignments.

Operational Management and Compliance

  • Evaluate the use of resources and cost‑containment activities.
  • Coordinate unit staffing to meet the needs of the department.
  • Identify one managerial problem and initiate test of change.
  • Actively participate in preparation of regulatory agency reviews.
  • Assist in administrative activities such as budget planning, cost containment, staffing schedules, and communication of concerns to the unit director.
  • Evaluate the impact of policies on daily operations.
  • Support administrative decisions and facilitate daily operational issues with staff.
  • Ensure compliance with educational requirements through scheduling, planning, and support.

Communication, Conflict Resolution, and Advocacy

  • Exhibit desire to hear and understand another's point of view.
  • Demonstrate and role model effective communication skills.
  • Take a leadership role in building and maintaining an open and candid communication environment.
  • Serve as an arbitrator in resolution of conflicts between nursing staff.
  • Take appropriate action to correct unacceptable communication/behavior as needed.
  • Counsel employees on attendance and performance issues.
  • Support units and colleagues needs through supportive, non‑judgmental behaviors.
  • Actively empower and advocate for nurses.
  • Address customer concerns and complaints, referring unresolved issues to the unit director or risk management.
  • Monitor issue resolution.

Quality Improvement and Education

  • Challenge and shape systems on the unit and hospital wide to achieve best possible outcomes.
  • Implement innovative approaches to meet the needs of patients and families.
  • Identify, recognize and respond to the needs of unit staff.
  • Initiate and collaborate to provide educational programs.
  • Develop management/leadership focused in‑service topics (time management, team building, conflict resolution, budget, leadership).
  • Demonstrate current evidence‑based practice and disseminate information.
  • Question management practice as it relates to research.
Commitments
  • Must meet all Clinical Nurse I Employee Commitments.
  • Achieve points and contact hours as defined in the PLAN (clinical lattice) point system to maintain position.
Qualifications

Minimum Required

  • Education:

    Graduate of an accredited pre‑licensure Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Experience:

    2 years of recent nursing experience and a minimum of 2 years in the area of concentration.
  • Licensure:
    Valid, unencumbered Registered Nursing License approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing.
  • Certification: BLS; ACLS may be required for certain departments post‑hire; additional certifications may be required based on department and specialty; if completing virtual care activities that may include multi‑state practice, an active compact/multistate license (eNLC) is required within 60 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MSN or DNP.
