Substitute School Nurse

Position Summary

The School Nurse is essential for managing the comprehensive health needs of students. This role involves implementing health care plans directed by physicians and ensuring that all district health care practices comply with laws related to student health issues. The nurse provides immediate care to students who are ill, medically fragile, or injured and serves as a key health‑care resource for teachers, staff, and administrators.

The role also includes conducting required health screenings, identifying health issues for appropriate referral, and ensuring students receive necessary follow‑up care.

• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
• Valid Georgia RN license
• CPR certification
• Criminal Justice Fingerprint clearance
• Background clearance

• Planning and managing projects; using pertinent software applications.
• Algebra and/or geometry; reading technical information; composing documents; facilitating group discussions; analyzing situations.
• Knowledge of health standards and hazards, communicable diseases, immunization requirements, pediatric disease processes.
• Scheduling activities, meetings, events; gathering and collating data; working with equipment and diverse groups; problem‑solving with guidelines and data.
• Communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; meeting deadlines; setting priorities; working as part of a team; handling frequent interruptions.

• Assesses situations involving students’ safety and other health related issues for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment, and complying with legal requirements.
• Assists in developing the department improvement plan for the purpose of developing best school nurse practices.
• Audits student immunizations to meet state audit requirements and protect students and personnel.
• Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, Special Education, teachers, and public agencies for student health services.
• Collects statistical data from screenings to develop best practices and eliminate barriers to learning.
• Conducts age‑appropriate health education programs in conjunction with classroom curriculum.
• Conducts first‑responder medical drills in each school to prepare staff for emergencies.
• Develops individual student care plans with input from parents and physicians for special needs or chronically ill students.
• Maintains confidential student files and records required by law and professional standards.
• Maintains contact with parents/guardians to advise them of changes in student health and recommend further intervention.
• Monitors students with chronic illnesses to assist them in achieving the highest functional level.
• Monitors students referred for illness and injury for immediate health care and follow‑up.
• Monitors attendance of students with chronic health problems to identify excessive absenteeism and develop improvement plans.
• Oversees medication administration by unlicensed personnel to ensure safety and accuracy.
• Participates in meetings, workshops, seminars, and interdisciplinary teams to share information on student health needs.
• Participates as a member of crisis intervention teams for counseling after serious events.
• Performs mandated screenings such as vision, dental, hearing, height/weight/BMI, back/scoliosis, etc. to refer medical conditions and provide appropriate care.
• Performs first aid, medication, specialized medical treatments (oral suctioning, catheterization, etc.) for ill or injured children.
• Prepares written materials (reports, student services, statistical information, correspondence, audits, core plans).
• Provides training on health subjects (diabetes, asthma, CPR) to students, teachers, parents to promote healthy lifestyles.
• Refers students requiring additional medical attention for follow‑up treatment.
• Reports health and safety issues to the Director of School Nurses and appropriate agencies to maintain safety and regulatory compliance.
• Researches topics related to health and medical care to provide information to staff, students, parents, and the public.
