Position: POLICE TRAINING INSTRUCTOR II - POLICE

CLASSIFICATION

TITLE:

POLICE TRAINING INSTRUCTOR IIPURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION

The purpose of this classification is to coordinate, supervise, and perform technical and administrative duties associated with instruction of basic mandate, in-service, and advanced/specialized training, to ensure compliance with applicable training requirements, and to enforce all county statutes, ordinances and the laws and regulations of the state.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
  • Coordinates and instructs all levels of basic mandate, in-service, and advanced/specialized training courses; ensures compliance with educational criteria established by applicable federal and state regulations.
  • Demonstrates various defensive tactics, weapons, and administrative responsibilities of police officers in a classroom setting and in live drills; enforces all safety rules during training.
  • Oversees activities and observes performance of students and adjunct instructors; reviews and discusses activities, problems, and any mistakes, safety and precautionary concerns; recommends methods for corrective action.
  • Prepares training lesson plans and related teaching aids for classroom presentations; writes departmental training bulletins and newsletters.
  • Researches, develops, and writes new training courses; prepares long range planning for course offerings; updates, maintains current course content.
  • Initiates, maintains, and upgrades training performance records of personnel attending classes; administers Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) entrance exam; scores examinations to determine pass/fail grades.
  • Maintains computerized records of training activities; enters/retrieves training information and other data to/from computer system.
  • Researches, tests, and evaluates new products and equipment relative to police training which may include firearms, ammunition and components, holsters, and related gear; submits recommendations.
  • Monitors radio transmissions to ensure all calls are answered; responds to calls of serious nature and to scene of subordinates' calls to answer questions, authorize actions, take control of situation, and serve as a back-up unit.
  • Responds to questions, complaints, and requests for information from students, the general public, news media, civic organizations, officers, employees, and other individuals; mediates conflicts with citizens and officers.
  • Exchanges information with dispatchers, attorneys, court personnel, fire and EMT personnel, medical examiner, medical professionals, and other departments and agencies; investigates complaints against subordinates.
  • Reviews documents processed by subordinates to ensure accuracy; reviews previously assigned cases with officers.
  • Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge and awareness of applicable laws/regulations; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations.
  • Attends shift and supervisory meetings, seminars, and specialized/update training sessions as appropriate; may serve on panels, boards, and/or committees.
  • Completes, prepares, and/or approves a variety of forms, logs, requests, records, reports, correspondence, and other documents associated with daily responsibilities of this position; reviews, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate; prepares and maintains files and administrative records.
  • Cooperate with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies and their officers or representatives when activities are related to investigations within county jurisdiction.
