Job Summary

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction at East Tennessee State University seeks a 9-month, tenure track Assistant Professor of Math Education position beginning August 2026 to teach in-person, online, and/or hybrid courses on the main campus and at the ETSU-Sevierville campus in teacher educator programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful applicant will teach undergraduate mathematics methods courses in the elementary education program which has seen a 25% increase in enrollment over the past two years.

At the graduate level, the successful applicant may teach in the Master of Arts in Teaching and/or Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction programs, both of which have experienced over a 30% increase in enrollment in the past year. In addition to teaching, candidates are expected to engage in research and scholarly activities and in service to the department, college, university, and profession.

The typical annual workload is 60% teaching, 20% research, and 20% service. The successful applicant may also supervise teacher candidates in the field.

Responsibilities include:

* Teach mathematics methods courses in a variety of delivery modes (face-to-face, online, hybrid) at the undergraduate and graduate levels on the main campus and/or Sevierville campus

* Create new and adapt existing courses to connect with real-world classroom experiences to evaluate students' ability to apply theory to practice in educational settings

* Supervise teacher candidates in the field, as needed

* Conduct, deliver, disseminate and publish professional research/scholarly works and/or creative works or activities

* Analyze program data for continuous improvement and to meet accreditation standards

* Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional service activities

* Work collaboratively with undergraduate and graduate level program faculty to develop new and/or enhance existing programs to maintain relevance to the field

* Mentor and/or advise students as they progress through their selected education program

The ideal candidate will:

* Possess the ability and willingness to teach face-to-face, online, and hybrid courses at two locations

* Be willing to engage with institutional student success initiatives

* Hold a commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development

* Demonstrate commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda appropriate to the mathematics education discipline

* Work with diverse populations and perspectives of students, faculty, and staff in support of the college's and university's mission

Required Qualifications

* Earned terminal degree (EdD or PhD) in Mathematics Education, Elementary Education, Curriculum and Instruction, or similar field with a concentration in math or STEM; ABD will be considered with degree awarded by August 14, 2026

* Minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in mathematics or mathematics education courses

Preferred Qualifications

* Experience teaching mathematics in grades K-8, especially K-5, in a U.S. school setting

* Experience supervising and/or mentoring pre-service student teacher candidates, especially in K-5 field placements

* Experience teaching face-to-face and online education courses, especially in mathematics education, at the university level

* Experience developing online education courses, especially mathematics education courses, at the university level

* Demonstrated potential to secure external research funding
