Children’s Library Assistant , Part Time

Johnson City Public Library Children's Library has an opening for an Assistant I. The Children's Library is a warm, busy place designed to serve children ages birth-12 and their caregivers.

Performs library work in planning programs and activities, and providing public service in the Children's Library with direct supervision.

A staff member in this position provides service to the public in the Children's Library. The duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, instruction on library and computer usage, assistance with the development and management of children's programs and exhibits, and serving on committees. This employee is considered to be experienced enough to have a functioning knowledge of library methods, customer service, and managerial skills.

Work is performed under general direction from the Assistant Director of Children’s Services. All work is evaluated through conferences and observations for soundness of judgment, innovation, and initiative in developing the assigned areas.

• Plans and implements youth programs
• In collaboration with the Marketing Coordinator, publicizes programs and events in-house and through social media
• Works directly with teen volunteers
• Makes materials suggestions and assists with weeding the youth collection
• Creates materials for programs and publicity
• Represents the library in community outreach
• Provides direct service to patrons at the Children's Library information desk
• Performs other duties as assigned

• General knowledge of library routine and procedures in the area of assignment
• General knowledge of library techniques, systems, and procedures
• Ability to plan and implement successful programs for children
• Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with library personnel and patrons
• Creative abilities to enhance patrons' library visits.
• Working knowledge of the practical application of computer operations and procedures
• Skilled in serving patrons satisfactorily

A bachelor's degree or equivalent is required. Experience working in a children's library is preferred.

This employee may be assigned special duties by a superior or, on a temporary basis, may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different position. Tasks involve some physical effort, i.e. such as standing, walking, frequent light lifting (5-25 pounds), or other restricted physical activities. Tasks require manual dexterity in the use of fingers, limbs, or body in the operation of shop and office equipment. Tasks may involve extended periods of sitting at a keyboard.

Tasks are regularly performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g. dirt, cold, rain, fumes).

Tasks require sound perception and discrimination; visual perception and discrimination; and oral communications ability.

This is a part-time (24 hours per week) position. Evening and weekend work is required. Starting pay in this classification is $14.64 per hour. Benefits include paid time off, participation in the library's retirement plan, and a great work environment.
